Despite a slow start, the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils used 60 percent shooting to earn a Gulf South Conference victory over Southern Arkansas with a final score of 82-69.

The Boll Weevils committed seven turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game, which aided Southern Arkansas to gain a seven point lead just under 10 minutes to go in the half.

The Weevils started getting comfortable with around nine minutes to go, when the team went on a 21-2 run to end the half. SAU did not reach the scoreboard in the last six minutes of the first half, as the Weevils took 34-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Weevils came out even stronger in the second half, shooting close to 70 percent. UAM led by more than 10 points for around 18 minutes of the second half. SAU went on a 10-5 run from the 13:39 mark to the 11:25 mark of the second half that brought the UAM lead under 10 points.

Leading the way for the Weevils was junior Deron Brown (Paris, Ky.), who led all scorers with 22 points. Brown recorded his second highest point total of the season after connecting on 8-of-14 field goals, four of which came from three-point range.

Freshman D’Angelo Dean (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded his best performance of the season after turning in 20 points. The 6-3 guard connected on 7-of-12 field goal attempts, while also recording his third double-double of the season and leading the game with 12 rebounds.

The only other Weevil to reach double-digits was junior Marcus Baham (Paterson, N.J.), who was just short of Dean’s totals with 19 points. Baham was also 7-of-12 from the field, while sinking all five of his free throw attempts.

The Muleriders were led by Scotty Lott, who finished with 20 points, including a game high six three pointers.

With the win, UAM improves to 12-7 overall and 4-3 in GSC action, while the Muleriders drop to 10-10 and 1-6 in GSC play. SAU has now lost five straight games.

The next action for the Weevils is Thursday, Feb. 7, when they host Harding University for the start of the second round of GSC games. Harding beat UAM on Jan. 12 in Searcy by a final score of 60-67. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm in the Steelman Fieldhouse.
