Weevils fall to #28 Montevallo
Published by UAM News March 14th, 2007 in News, Schools.The Weevils opened scoring in the top of the first with an RBI grounder by Matt Whatley (Jr., Sachse, Texas), but the 1-0 lead did not last long as Montevallo responded immediately with a two-run homer by J.D. Pruitt to put the Falcons up 2-1. Montevallo extended their lead to 3-1 in the second inning as Jeffrey Reach stole home.
UAM came back in the third inning, narrowing the margin to 3-2 as Craig Caldwell (Fr., West Monroe, La. hit a leadoff homer; but once again, Montevallo would answer, as Pruitt scored on an RBI grounder to extend the Falcons’ lead to 4-2.
The Weevils pulled to within 4-3 as Haley Hougen (Sr., Wylie, Texas) scored on an error, but again the Falcons responded, as Eric Moore smashed an RBI single up the middle to extend the Falcons’ lead to 5-3.
Hougen pulled the Weevils to within one as he led off the sixth inning with a homer, and the Weevils tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Caldwell. However, the Falcons answered yet again, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to push ahead 10-5.
The Weevils rallied in the top of the seventh, as Hougen hit a two-run single to left; and both Caldwell and Matt Gardner (Fr., West Monroe, La.) added RBI singles to pull UAM to within 10-9. However, the UAM offense could manage no more, and the Falcons added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to pad the lead and seal the victory.
Hougen and Jon Michael Kidd (Fr., West Monroe, La.) both had three hits in the loss, while Caldwell added two. Tyler Price (So., Maurice, La.) suffered the loss after surrendering ten runs, nine earned in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
UAM returns to action on Saturday, March 17, as they open Gulf South Conference play with a doubleheader against Christian Brothers. First pitch from Weevil Field is scheduled for noon.
