Wal-Mart to phase out layaways by the end of 2006

In a press release dated September 14, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., announced that lay-aways would be phased out by the end of 2006. Pat Curran, executive vice president of store operations said, “Demand for layaway service has declined steadily as consumers turn to other options, such as online shopping, gift cards and no-cost alternatives. To assist our customers, we are offering one last opportunity to use layaway service this Christmas season.”

Customers will have until November 19,2006 to place items in layaway and merchandise must be picked up by December 8,2006. - Wal-Mart News Desk

Mr. Jim at Dad’s Place referred me here. Glad to find a source of online news for SEARK. WalMart phasing out layaway is just sad. I realize they’re trying to get away from their rural roots but c’mon, not everyone can qualify for or even wants huge credit card bills. Look how many people take advantage of WalMart’s blitz and put that stuff on layaway for Christmas. The ones that don’t have credit are to do what? What about the folks that live paycheck to paycheck (especially around here)? Are they going to be able to provide more expensive items for their families? I’m not referring just to Christmas, but look how many families also put clothes on layaway for back to school.
