Union Ridge Cemetery #2 Association received a $9,291 check representing a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council for cemetery documentation and preservation.

The grant is one of seven grants awarded, through a competitive process, to local organizations working to preserve African American cemeteries in Arkansas. Funds for the special cemetery initiative were provided through a general improvement appropriation from the Arkansas Legislature to the Arkansas Archeological Survey.

The presentation of the check took place Wednesday at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church.

The Arkansas Humanities Council was represented by the AHC Executive Director, Mr. Paul Austin and AHC program officer, Ms. Lasuandra Williams.

The check was presented to Mr. Melvin Veasey, project director for the Union Ridge Cemetery #2 Association and Union Ridge Cemetery #2 Association board members, Mr. Beniolle Fisher, Ms. Mae Helen Cabaness, Ms. Maxine Cotton, Ms. Maryland Block, and Ms. Wanda Veasey. State Senator Jimmy Jeffress represented the state.

The Arkansas Humanities Council was established in 1974 to develop a statewide program to acquaint Arkansans with humanities fields of study and provide financial support for well-planned humanities projects.
