English and social studies teachers will have the opportunity to spend a month in the Republic of South Africa June 24 through July 25 as part of a program in curriculum development hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Teachers will study South African history and culture with the goal of incorporating what they learn into their classroom teaching. The program is available for humanities teachers in grades 6-12.
The month-long trip is being funded by the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program of the U.S. Department of Education. Funding covers round-trip airfare for each participant from Little Rock to Cape Town as well as lodging, transportation, meals, and entrance fees to various attractions in South Africa. Each participant will also receive a tuition scholarship from UAM for three hours of graduate credit in history.
The first half of the trip will be spent in Cape Town, where teachers will hear lectures on South African history and culture at the University of the Western Cape. Participants will also visit sites of historical and cultural importance, including Durban, Johannesburg, Soweto, Kimberley, Swaziland, and rural KwaZulu Natal Province. There will also be trips to several South African townships, a school, Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and various museums and parks. Teachers will develop curriculum materials for their classrooms based on the lectures, visits, and travels.
For information about the program and how to apply, contact Dr. Richard Corby, professor of history, at (870) 460-1847, (870) 367-9281, or e-mail Corby at corby@uamont.edu.
