UAM To Host Two-Week Summer Institute On Israeli-Palestinian Conflict June 8-20
Published by Joe Burgess January 31st, 2008 in Site.The University of Arkansas at Monticello will host a two-week summer institute for Arkansas teachers June 8-20 entitled “Two People in One Troubled Land: The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.”
The institute is designed for humanities teachers in grades 6-12. Teachers completing the institute will receive three semester hours of graduate credit in history. UAM will provide scholarships to each participant covering the cost of tuition, fees, and books as well as on-campus lodging and meals.
The institute is limited to 20 participants. Deadline for application is February 29. To apply, contact Dr. Richard Corby, professor of history, at (870) 460-1847, (870) 367-9281.
The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences is conducting the institute, which is funded in part by the Arkansas Council for the Humanities and the National Association for the Humanities.
Participants will study the origins and the development of the struggle between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and explore themes vital to an understanding of the last 100 years, including prejudice, nationalism, and diversity. The institute will also look at the social, religious, political, and economic factors which have contributed to this conflict. A number of frameworks in social studies and English are addressed.
The institute will include a visit to the Islamic Center and Temple B’nai Israel in Little Rock where teachers will talk with the imam and rabbi, respectively, about their two religions.
