A UAM organization, “Students To Students”, put on an excellent demonstratin this week about what happens if you “get loaded, before you hunt”.

The group of approximately 50 students, with both guys and ladies are involved, is striving for students to have “alcohol awareness”, when it comes to mixing drinking with any other activity.

Group member, Brooke Standridge, a freshman computer information systems major from Dermott, showed how students would were “beer goggles” and aim and fire a paint-ball gun.

The photos seem to show the results.

The groups faculty sponsor is Ms. Laura Hughes.

UAM’s Chancellor, Dr. Jack Lassiter, also took part.

I think this will catch students attention about the risk that they are taking when they get drunk and go hunting with their friends or family. One of them is more likly to get hurt when they go buzz hunting. This is one of the many different ways to demonstrate why drinking is bad and the many dangers it can bring. I am proud to know that there are other people out there who care about the well being of our fellow students who drink and hunt during this time of the year. This hits a little close to home for me, because one of my friends father went hunting one afternoon last year and he wasn’t found till later on the next day. He was getting down from his deer stand and he forgot to unload his gun and as he tried to get down he sliped and fell and the gun went off killing him instantly. You may say well that could happen to anyone, but when your are ahead of the game and fish commitee and your an avid spokesman for gun saftey, one starts to think that maybe he wasn’t all there, because he would ALWAYS put his gun on safety before he got down and he would always leave before it got dark, but the cops told the family the time of death was at 9:45 which is well after dark. They say the only posible thing that could of happened was since he had been drinking he may have passed out then realized after he woke up that it was time to go home and he tried to get down. So I think that making this aware to hunters that like to drink is a very good idea. So thank you students and facalty who had a part in this demonstration!! Keep up the good work!!!
