UAM offers economic education workshop
Published by UAM News June 8th, 2007 in UAM News. The University of Arkansas at Monticello’s Center for Economic Education will offer a three-day workshop, “Face to Face with the Frameworks,” for K-8 teachers in Crossett July 27-29, according to Dr. Marsha Clayton, center director.
The workshop will feature new and innovative ways to meet the economic education requirements of the revised Arkansas Social Studies Frameworks, which are state-mandated requirements and guidelines for teaching social studies in Arkansas.
Classroom teachers will lead grade-level curriculum demonstrations and “hands-on” activities to be used in the elementary and middle school classroom. According to Clayton, the workshop is designed to increase teacher understanding of basic economic concepts and provide the comfort level instructors need to integrate economics into the curriculum. Participants will receive age-appropriate lesson plans correlated to the revised K-8 Arkansas Social Studies Frameworks, and learn of the variety of available resources such as websites with downloadable and free economic lessons and activities.
The UAM Center for Economic Education is affiliated with the Arkansas Council on Economic Education (ACEE). The ACEE and its six affiliated centers assist K-12 teachers in preparing students to become fully participating citizens and productive members of society by providing resources and training that will enable educators to teach the fourth ‘R’, real-life economics. The UAM workshop is one of four workshops the ACEE and its affiliated Centers are offering on the revised social studies frameworks this summer. Additional information on summer workshop offerings is available at the ACEE website.
The workshop is appropriate for K-8 educators in all content areas. Participants will receive 18 hours of staff development and a stipend of $150 upon successful completion of the workshop. Participants must be under contract to a school for the 2007-08 year. A $25 materials fee is required for registration (refundable if cancellation is received by June 13th). On-line registration is available at the ACEE website. Wednesday, June 20 is the registration deadline. Interested parties can obtain additional information by contacting Dr. Marsha Clayton, center director, at (870) 460-1673 or by contacting the ACEE at (501) 682-4230.
