UAM Library Receives Conservation Bookshelf From Institute of Museum and Library Services
Published by UAM News August 14th, 2008 in UAM News.Treasured objects and artifacts held by the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s Taylor Library and Technology Center and other cultural institutions in southeast Arkansas will be preserved for future generations thanks to a donation from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
UAM recently received the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf, a set of conservation books, DVDs, and online resources, which will “provide an essential resource base for the preservation efforts of institutions in the region which hold special collections,” according to Sandra Campbell, director of the Taylor Library.
Mary Heady, special collections and reference librarian, will serve as coordinator of the bookshelf project with assistance from Helen Guenter, associate librarian for serials and reference.
UAM received the donation based on an application describing the needs and plans for care of its collections. The IMLS Bookshelf focuses on collections typically found in history or art museums and in libraries’ special collections, with an added selection of texts for zoos, aquaria, public gardens, and nature centers.
The IMLS began the project in 2005 in response to a study by Heritage Preservation documenting the dire state of the nation’s collections.
