UAM homecoming set for October 28
Published by Jeff October 17th, 2006 in UAM News.From the UAM News Desk - The University of Arkansas at Monticello will celebrate Homecoming October 28 but the real celebration begins October 23 with a week of activities and events for students and alumni. Highlights of Homecoming week include the 50th reunion of the class of 1956, special recognition for the 1955 and ‘56 AIC champion football teams and the �56 league champion Boll Weevil basketball team, and a performance by alumni of the university’s A Cappella Choir.
Student events include a Spirit Wall painting competition in front of the John F. Gibson University Center on Monday, October 23, a chicken cook-off on Tuesday, October 24, and an eating competition sponsored by National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week on Wednesday, October 25. An on-campus parade, featuring the 135-piece UAM marching band, is slated for October 26 at 12:30 p.m. with a bonfire and pep rally at 7 p.m. on the lawn of the Fine Arts Center.
Alumni events include a reception for noted outdoor artist Terry Williams on Wednesday, October 25 at 7 p.m. in the gallery of the Taylor Library and Technology Center. Williams is a 1966 UAM graduate who is exhibiting a selection of his outdoor art at the library gallery through October 28.
The UAM Sports Hall of Fame will induct five new members at a banquet on Thursday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the University Center. The inductees are football All-Americans Jack Allen, Charlie James and Sean Rochelle, basketball All-American Ikie Corbin, and two-sport All-American Lisa McClure-Wells. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased by calling Jim Brewer at (870) 460-1074. A reception hosted by Chancellor and Mrs. Jack Lassiter will be held in the Chancellor�s home prior to the banquet.
Activities for Friday, October 27 include:
- The 43rd annual Dr. Scott Boyd Memorial Golf Tournament, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Monticello Country Club. The event is a two-person scramble with an entry fee of $40 per team. Contact Dr. Kathy King at (870) 460-1596 for more information.
- A reception for alumni of the A Cappella Choir and its long-time director, Dr. John Dougherty, at 5 p.m. in the Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center.
- An alumni reception in the home of Chancellor and Mrs. Jack Lassiter at 6 p.m.
- The annual Arkansas A&M/UAM alumni dinner in the Green Room of the University Center at 7 p.m. Tickets to the dinner are $12 and may be purchased at the door. The dinner includes presentation of the Alumni Award for Merit and Achievement to Frank Wilson of Rison and the Continuing the Connection Award to Jim Trimm of Aurora, Colo.
- A sing-a-long by A Cappella Choir alumni at 8:30 p.m. in the Harris Recital Hall of the Music Building.
Activities for Saturday, October 28, include:
- A reunion breakfast for the class of 1956 at 8:30 a.m. in the Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center.
- The African-American Alumni Elite Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the Capitol Room of the University Center. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. For information, contact Shay Gillespie at (870) 367-2801 or Classie Jones-Green at (870) 536-9159.
- A rehearsal for the A Cappella Reunion Choir from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Harris Recital Hall in the Music Building.
- An alumni reception from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Adams Room of Harris Hall.
- A performance by the A Cappella Reunion Choir, under the director of Dr. John Dougherty, at 10 a.m. in the Fine Arts Center auditorium.
- Fraternity and sorority reunions from 10 to 11 a.m. in the University Center.
- Tailgating, beginning at 11 a.m. around Weevil Pond.
- The Walk of Champions for the UAM football team, featuring the marching band and cheerleaders, east of Weevil Pond.
- Pre-game ceremonies, including the introduction of the 2006 Homecoming Court and coronation of the Homecoming Queen beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium.
- Kickoff of the UAM-West Alabama football game at 3 p.m.
- The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity annual alumni fellowship following the game at 6 p.m. at the Sadie T. Johnson Community Building in Jordan Park.
