All events, with the exception of log birling, will be held at Forestry Park. The birling competition will be held in Weevil Pond.
Field Day is the culmination of a week-long competition in technical and physical forestry skills to determine who will represent UAM at the Association of Southern Forestry Clubs Conclave to be hosted March 6-8 by the University of Florida in Gainesville.
UAM has won Conclave 28 times in the event’s 50-year history. Schools scheduled to compete include UAM, the University of Georgia, Stephen F. Austin State University, Clemson, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, Auburn, Louisiana State, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Florida.
Field Day will begin at 8 a.m. with archery competition. Other events include axe throwing, knife throwing, pole felling, log chopping, crosscut and bow sawing, and pole climbing. There will also be log rolling, where two students use poles to roll large logs along the ground, and log birling, the day’s most popular spectator competition. In birling, two students climb on a large log floating in Weevil Pond and attempt to roll each other into the icy water.
