University of Arkansas at Monticello head basketball coach Mike Newell picked up his 250th career victory as the Boll Weevils (8-10, 3-3 GSC) upset #14 Christian Brothers, downing the Buccaneers 65-49 on Thursday night at Steelman Fieldhouse.
The Weevils took charge early, pulling ahead by six points (11-5) just over five minutes into the game. However, CBU clawed back and took the lead just three minutes later, one of nine lead changes in the contest.
The Bucs held the lead for the last eleven minutes of the half, pulling ahead by as many as seven (26-19) with 1:01 remaining in the half before the Weevils were able to cut the deficit to three (26-23) at halftime.
UAM reclaimed the lead on a Torre Doty (Sr., Austin, Texas) jumper less than two minutes into the half. CBU fought back, taking the lead until the 8:11 mark, when MJumbe “J.B.” Williams (Sr., Compton, Calif.) drilled a jumper to give the Weevils the lead for good.
UAM pushed their lead from two (45-43) to 14 (59-45) after a 14-2 run over a six-minute span. The Weevils’ margin of victory, 16 points, was their biggest lead of the night.
CBU’s Kevin Weybright led all scorers with 30 points. Doty led UAM with 21 points, while Nate Newell (Sr., Monticello, Ark.) added 19 points and Williams added 16.
UAM shot 55.0 percent from the floor in the second half.
The Weevils will return to action on Saturday, January 27, as they travel to Magnolia to face Southern Arkansas. Tip-off from the W.T. Watson Athletic Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
