UAM Chancellor Appointed To AASCU Council of State Representatives
Published by UAM News February 4th, 2008 in UAM News.Dr. Jack Lassiter, chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Monticello, has been appointed to the Council of State Representatives of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).
The role of the Council of State Representatives has been expanded by AASCU to include observing and providing counsel on state higher education trends and issues. Members help formulate and recommend public policy agenda to AASCU and are asked to provide responses on federal and state legislative matters of immediate concern to higher education.
AASCU is comprised of 430 public colleges and universities in the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The organization has four primary goals:
• to promote appreciation and support for public higher education and the contributions of its member colleges and universities;
• to analyze public policy and to serve as advocates for member institutions and the students they serve;
• to provide policy leadership and program support to strengthen academic quality, promote access and inclusion, and facilitate educational innovation; and
• to create professional development opportunities for institutional leaders, especially presidents, chancellors and their spouses.
Lassiter was appointed chancellor of UAM in 2004. He earlier served as executive vice president of the UA System from 2001-04 and chancellor of the UA Community College at Batesville from 1997-2001. He came to UAM in 1977 as director of the Learning Development Center before returning to Texas in 1979 to serve two years as dean of college and student services at Wharton County Junior College. He returned to UAM in 1980 as vice chancellor for university relations and student services. In 1993, he became UAM’s chief academic officer when he was named vice chancellor for academic affairs and student services.
