UAM Art Dept., UAM CTC Hospitality Program, & Drew Co. Extension Homemakers Present Empty Bowls Benefit
Published by News Release April 8th, 2008 in Clubs.Mr. Scott Lykens, a professional potter and the ceramics instructor at UAM, has introduced the Empty Bowls project to his students and to the community. The Empty Bowls project is simple in its concept; Art students create hand thrown earthenware bowls, the hospitality program students will prepare the food, the EHC members will promote the program and will be responsible for making and distributing the tickets. Most important, all proceeds will be given to the Drew County Sr. Citizens Food Program.
The Empty Bowls project got started in 1990 when a Michigan art teacher and his students were searching for a way to raise funds to help support a food drive. The event was so well received that it has now become a nationally recognized project to provide financial support for organizations that fight hunger. For more information on the national Empty Bowls program go to www.emptybowls.net.
Our Empty Bowls event will be held at The Trotter House on Friday, April 11, from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.
Guests will be served a simple soup lunch after which they will be invited to select and take one of the hand-made pottery bowls home with them as a reminder of hunger in the world and that they, through this program, have helped in a small way to alleviate some of it in Drew County. The funds raised through the Empty Bowls event will go to our local Senior Citizen Food Program to provide meals for our older citizens and will be eligible for matching funds from the government as well as from the Feinstein Foundation of Rhode Island. The Feinstein Foundation makes $1,000,000 available each March and April to be divided among hunger fighting agencies nationwide as a fund raising match.
For more information or for tickets, which are $15 each, you may contact EHC president, Judy Murphy, at 367-2533; EHC community service chair, or Juanita Webb, at 367-5804.
