UAM Announces Monticello Firefighters Association Endowment

The Monticello Firefighters Association has recently created a scholarship endowment to benefit students at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Fire Chief Eric Chisom presented the endowment to Dr. Karla Hughes, UAM Chancellor on Spetember 26. Hughes said, “This gift symbolizes the selfless nature of our first responders. I am proud to accept this donation from the Monticello Firefighters Association and I hope it will encourage UAM students to consider a life of service to others. The Monticello Firefighters Association has worked for several years to raise these funds for Drew County students to use at the Monticello, Crossett, or McGehee campus. The scholarship we are creating today will help a student pursue their dream of a college education.”
The Monticello Fireman’s Association was established in 2012 by full-time and volunteer members of the local Fire Department, and is independent of the City of Monticello. The organization’s stated goals include supporting the community; fostering and encouraging a higher degree of skill and efficiency; committing to provide the public with a professional, highly trained staff; pursuing safety; cultivating friendship among its members; elevating and improving the moral, intellectual, social and economic conditions of its members.
MFA is funded through membership dues and fundraising throughout the community. It supports charitable organizations including the DHS Angel Tree, Shop with a Cop, The Call, and MDA’s Fill the Boot, and offers temporary relocation assistance to families who are displaced by fires. Scholarship endowments established through the UAM Foundation Fund allow for regular distribution of scholarship funds long into the future. Any Drew County resident is eligible to apply for the award. Vice Chancellor for Advancement Jeff Weaver said, “I was speechless when the Association reached out to me to tell me that they had fulfilled the requirements to start this endowment. It is a testament to the generosity of Monticello and our first responders.” Scholarship funds become endowed when they reach at least $15,000, and additional gifts the fund will increase its reach to help UAM students financially.
