UAM 50, West Georgia 17

The UAM football used a school record 30 points in the second quarter to gain a large enough margin to secure a 50-17 win over West Georgia, keeping UAM in a tie for second place in the Gulf South Conference.

The Thursday night game was due to UAM being featured on the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week for the second straight week. With the win, UAM improved its GSC-TV record to 3-2. Overall this season, UAM moves to 5-2 and 3-1 in the GSC. The Wolves drop to 0-6 and 0-3.

The UAM offense put over 600 total yards for the third time this season with a 653-yard performance.

Coming in to the game, UAM possessed the GSC’s best rush offense (240.7) while UWG had the league’s worst rushing defense (259.0). The final numbers agree with that statistic.

UAM racked up 431 yards on the ground, including two rushers over 100 yards. Freshman Andrel Johnson (5-9, 200, Metairie, La.) led the UAM ground attack with 19 carries for 163 yards and three touchdown runs, while sophomore Scott Buisson (5-10, 175, Metairie, La.) also had 19 carries, but racked up 109 yards and one touchdown run.

Buisson has now rushed for at least 100 yards in five straight contests.

The UAM runners racked up a 6.5 yards per-carry average, breaking a UAM single-game record.

Buisson also had an impressive night through the air, completing 13 of 22 passes for 226 yards and two touchdown tosses.

Buisson’s main target in the game was senior Clarence Denmark (5-11, 185, Jacksonville, Fla.) who caught four passes for 121 yards and hauled in both of Buisson’s touchdown throws.

Senior kicker Nick Green (6-1, 197, Ponchatoula, La.) improved his season numbers after hitting 3 of 4 field goals in the game. His made field goals were from 30, 18, and 22 yards. His only missed field goal was from 51 yards. Green went from 3 of 10 before the game to 6 of 14 at the end of the game.

The UAM defense allowed 282 yards through the air, but only allowed six yards on the ground, which easily gave UAM the win in total offense yards. UAM racked up 653, while UWG finished with only 288.

The Weevils racked up 36 first downs, which re-sets a UAM single-game record for the second time this season after breaking the record for the first time with 35 against Arkansas Tech.

UAM now has eight days to prepare for its next opponent, West Alabama, for homecoming. That game is scheduled for Saturday, October 18 for a 3 p.m. kickoff.

Homecoming festivities start on Monday, October 13 and last through Sunday, October 19.
