Tax Day Tea Party-Photos & VIDEO
April 18th, 2009 by SubmittedAt noon, yesterday,an estimated 200 citizens met in what is described as “a modern day ‘Boston Tea Party’” to hear speakers, and show their unity against what was described as “taxes that begin when you get up and turn off your alarm clock”.
Here’s a video containing many photos of people and signs at the rally. The video is by Renee Taylor, one of the speakers for the event.
The event which was organized by Russell Corker, and included local speakers and a guest speaker.
Â
Renee Taylor, of FamilySecurityMatters.org,  described the current national situation by saying the current legislators have, “ spent us into an abyss that is destroying the very fabric of our nation”.
Ms. Taylor later commented, “As parents, we must educate our children that education and hard work are the pathway to success,” encouraging the crowd.
John Scott McClendon opened his portion of the event by saying, “I didn’t know that we’d be on the square, defending capitalism like it was a dirty word, one day,” and added, “I feel strongly that the desire to maintain our democracy, as it was designed, transends polital party, personal agenda, or financial gains.”
“The American people must hold our leadership accountable. It is extremely disconcerning to me to hear representatives in congress state, without shame, that they did not read the entire bill before casting a vote in favor of it. How did they know what they were voting for.” as stated by McClendon drew agreement from the listeners.
The last speaker of the day, attorney Timothy Griffin, of Little Rock told the crowd that “earmarks are going to be higher in 2009, than they were last year.”
To show a peaceful for of a protest, the many participants threw symbolic tea bags into a trash barrel, seemingly in agreement that it is time to make a public statement.

IGNORANCE! No wonder this country is in the mess it is.
Thanks Monticello live for the great coverage yesterday. The tea parties were a huge success not only in Monticello but the whole country.
That is CORRECT Lucas! IGNORANCE by WE THE PEOPLE for trusting our elected officials to do what is best for the people that elected them into public office. Our elected officials are our employees; they work for us, not themselves. We must tell them in advance how we want them to vote on any particular bill being introduced to become a law, before it becomes LAW. WE THE PEOPLE must communication and monitor what our elected officials are voting on and why they vote the why they do.
We elected them, and we can vote them out of office just as easily or even, call for a recall to have them removed from office. Every one of us, must hold themselves’ accountable and responsible for the condition in which we have allowed our local, state and federal government to operate.
IGNORANTE NO MORE!!!
SILENT MAJORITY NO MORE!!!
Did spending just all of a sudden spiral out of control?
Of course it didn’t. It took on a whole new life during the Reagan administration, and has been going crazy ever since.
Where were the enraged protesters prior to January 20 of this year?
What a great day it was for the tea party. The weather was beautiful. The crowd was energetic. I can’t wait till the next one!
Where have the protesters been? This is not something that just came up….These issues were present when President Bush was in office. Maybe it just feels better to complain when a Republican is NOT in office. I’m just saying PEOPLE!!!
This is kind of like the old addage goes: FOR EVERY STEP THAT YOU TAKE FORWARD.. THE GOVERNMENT MAKES YOU TAKE THREE STEPS BACK!! Sometimes it seems as if the harder we try to make ends meet, we just get deeper in the mess that has already been made.. I’m tired of having to pay for the governments’ stupid mistakes.. all of those bailouts that they did to help those companies, could’ve been used to help the poor people and the elderly get more help with their medical expenses!! All they’re doing is making things better for themselves and not taking others into consideration.. one of these days..it’s all gonna come back on them.. just wait and see!!!
For all you folks that keep asking where the protesters were before January 2009…
There comes a time when enough is enough! Patriotic citizens have been clinging to the belief that our elected officials would eventually get back to the principles of a free-market democracy. That means limited government! That means the power to succeed; or fail, is directly in the hands of the individual. If you truly think about it, the bailouts are at the center of this political storm. Personally, I hoped to see the new administration reverse the momentum on handing out money to undeserving persons/businesses! When this did not happen, it gave me clear evidence that our new president does not have what it takes to make the tough decisions which will get us back to the basic principles of democracy which have allowed this GREAT country to evolve into the haven of opportunity that it has been.
You could even look at these protests this way: Many, many people who voted for Obama are now extremely disappointed that he did not put the axe to legislation which is destroying the basic principles of the free-market system.
Once again the liberal political movement is trying to use the shame of racism to silence the core group of citizens who are working hard every day, paying taxes, tithing, volunteering, and keeping their families together!!! I AM EXTREMELY TIRED OF BEING CALLED RACIST WHEN I DO NOT AGREE WITH A PERSON OF COLOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! According to your method of judgement regarding the TEA Parties, we should assume that ACORN is racist because there are few – if any caucasions being served by it. And, what about the NAACP? How can you not call this organization racist when it is not advancing everyone? Need I go on???
I do not judge people on the color of their skin. I do not immediately assume that because your skin is not “light” that you have no value, talent, or intellect. I did not assume that Mr. Obama would not make a good president based on his skin color! However, I do agree 100% with the TEA Party agenda.
Before you call someone racist, you need to assess your own motives!!!!!
I was at the TEA Party to cover it for MonticelloLive, and it was clear that it was more than “an Obama bashing event”.
The phrase “conservative” was used more than the mention of political parties, and the references to tax collection and spending could only reflect on preciously elected officials.
On the other hand, current spending was also described from the stage, such as reports that the stimulus package was not read by Washington, before it was signed.

Joe, thanks for your input. You are right. This was not a political event. This was not intended to be an Obama bashing rally. Our government is way out of control. Both Democrats and Republicans are to blame. Of course the current administration seems to be pushing as hard and fast as they can to destroy the free market system of this country. This cannot be allowed. We all need to educate ourselves on what the founding fathers of our country intended. If you haven’t had a chance to read The 5000 Year Leap then please do so. Our country in in jeopardy.
Opposing opinions does not mean the ignorance of one party over the other, they are just that and nothing more…opposing opinions.
