Surprised:
Yes, I am young. But please do not assume that I have growing up to do. YES, I am young. But that does not mean that I am not capable of assessing a situation, and making a judgment based on what I observe. You do NOT know me, and you do not know the events of my life, so please do not INSULT me and presume that you can read my posts and say that I have growing up to do just because my opinion is not shared by you.

W.H.:
Thanks for clarifying that school zones are patrolled regularly. This is nice to know. I have discussed my thoughts the speed limit on Old Warren Road with several people that I know, and several have admitted to me that they often travel 40-45 MPH on Old Warren. I, however, cannot afford a ticket, so I do the speed limit...despite the fact that I know that the guy that is following me too closely is probably cursing me out! I know that when you are in a hurry, it is easy to get impatient and want to drive faster, just so that you arrive at your destination a bit sooner. I drive the speed limit...I just wish that in this case, the speed limit were a bit faster.

Mrs. Mathews:
I do NOT wish to drive like I live in L.A. I do NOT live in L.A. I live in Monticello, AR...by choice. If I wanted to drive like I live in L.A., then I would MOVE to L.A. Unluckily for you, I live right here in Monticello, Arkansas.
I feel that you are blowing this matter way out of proportion.
Increasing the speed limit does NOT necessarily mean that something TERRIBLE will happen. Accidents happen every day. At ALL speeds. 30MPH is not some magic number that will prevent an accident from occurring, as we can see from the accident that occurred on Rose Street over the 4th of July weekend (covered by Monticello Live), in which NO ONE WAS AT FAULT.
So, that being said, I STILL hope that the speed limit on that road is increased. I do NOT think that increasing the speed limit will cause some TERRIBLE thing to happen. My opinion of this matter remains the same, and there is NOTHING that you, nor anyone else, can say to change my mind.
That being said, I will drive up and down OLD WARREN ROAD 10 times a day if I like, and there is NOTHING you can do about it. I will drive it as much as I please. As long as I am doing the speed limit, its my business.

P.S. You didn't hurt my feelings. You annoyed me. I'm only speaking my mind as well. And I'll drive wherever I want.

Patrolliing the schools is very high on the priority list. Just b/c you dont see an officer every time you go through does not mean that we have not been patrolling, just that we are probably ahead of you or behind you. Yes accidents, robberies, thefts and some other things rate higher than patrolling for traffic. Even if we dont agree with one another, every one is intitaled to thier on opinion and thats what is great about this web site, b/c I love the discussions. But just like your opinion, I wouldnt count on the speed limit changing either.

Can we say young and alot of growing up to do! Life changes as you get older and things you see in life help that to change. In stead of going faster you want it to slow down. Same with this situation.
One day Brandy you will look back at these comments and wonder where yoru thougths were coming from. Speed kills as well as people not paying attention to what they are doing.

WH, I'm not sure if my opinion on the matter would change if the scenario you describe occurred. All I'm saying is this: the given situation on Old Warren Road is not acceptable. I simply believe that increasing the speed limit, even by 5 MPH would prevent a lot of drivers from following too closely, and reduce the chances of multi-car accidents on that road. It is quite rare that I actually see drivers obeying the speed limit on that road anyway. Often, when I am driving down Old Warren Road, the vehicle that may have been right in front of me when I turned left at the red light will often speed right ahead as soon as he or she rounds the first curve. Or, if a vehicle is directly behind me, that driver will often impatiently get entirely too close to the back of my car, forcing me to increase my speed to avoid getting rear ended (should I have to slam on my brakes for any reason.) The fact that the road will be widened (with shoulders) will, in my opinion, make it safe enough to increase the speed limit. I am not suggesting a dramatic increase. I am only suggesting perhaps a 5 or 10MPH increase in the speed limit. I am hopeful that the State Highway Department will assess the road again following the completion of the work that has been taking place.
If the speed limit is NOT increased, then there needs to be CONSTANT patrol of that road, (at LEAST during the hours that school is in session) not just for the first week after school begins again in August. I understand that Drew County's resources are very tight, and that this is highly unlikely to occur. There are other, more important duties that our officers must see to. Patrolling Old Warren Road cannot be too high on the priority list. (I make this statement while taking into consideration the recent high numbers in accidents, shootings, stabbings, etc.)
Mrs. Mathews, perhaps you did not read my post very well. You are certainly mistaken in your JUDGMENT that I "want to get paid." If YOU come and rear end my car, because I happen to be doing the speed limit, you WILL replace the back end of my car. I was offering a solution to help prevent this type of accident, for myself and many potential others. I have a job, and I work very hard for my money. I do NOT find it necessary, nor do I WISH to be involved in an accident so that I can GET PAID. So please do not judge me or make accusations.

I wonder if your opinion would change if the speed limit went up and some one in your family or one of your children some day gets run over because some one is driving too fast to react to a child chasing a ball into the street. Im not trying to condem Brandy, she is not the only one who complains about the speed limit on Old Wr. Road. There is a bad traffic problem in and around the schools with no solution in sight but going up with the speed limit is definitly not the answer.

I have lived in Monticello my entire life, and I know how each different way to get to UAM. However, given the location of my apartment, Old Warren Road is the most convenient way for me.
I also NEVER schedule 8:00 classes...my first class usually begins at 9. So the traffic from either school district is not an issue for me. (Unless my last class ends around 3pm.)
My opinion remains unchanged. If the speed limit is increased, then drivers who obey the speed limits will be less likely to encounter the drivers who practically push you down the road. However, I will continue to do the speed limit...and when I DO get rear ended by some jerk who is following too closely and not paying attention, then I will NOT be at fault, and HIS or HER insurance can pay to have the back end of my car replaced...

If you want to get technical, the speed limit is already 5 miles an hour over the state limit for a school zone, which is 25 mph, so if anything it should go down instead of up.
