Silver Slippers or Ruby Slippers? – DC 4th Graders Research Wizard of Oz
March 7th, 2013 by Submitted
Drew Central fourth graders in Eva Arrington’s class enjoyed reading, researching, and exploring the classic The Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum.
After analyzing and close reading the book, students viewed the movie and made comparisons. One example was Dorothy’s shoes were silver slippers in the book, but in the movie her shoes were ruby slippers. The study ended with students developing research projects.
Weston Cater used the idea of The Scarecrow wanting a brain as a spring board to find information about the brain. While presenting his project, he shared the fact that a human brain has 100,000 miles of blood vessels. Another student, Kane Taylor, used details from the book to compile a list of The Tin Woodsman’s attributes and created a sculpture using foil. His research uncovered that Buddy Ebson was first signed to play the part in the movie The Wizard of Oz, but had an allergic reaction to the silver paint so the studio had to hire Jack Haley to replace him.
Aspen White’s research on tornados led to her discovering that in Arkansas about 39 tornados occur each year. In Drew County between 1957 and 2009, 16 tornados had hit. She learned how to use Power Point for her presentation.
