Storm Photos, Trees Down
April 16th, 2011 by Joe BurgessA severe thunderstorm with strong straight-line winds rolled through the Monticello area around 4:30 this morning, leaving trees and power lines down in its path.
As of 8:20 a.m., Bowser Road remains closed near its intersection with Babin Drive. Entergy is on the scene restoring power.
A tree fell through the roof of the mobile home shown above as the family within was running to the door. A limb fell through the roof striking the wife as she was attempting to get outside. No major injuries were reported.
A tornado warning was issued but quickly expired for the northeast Drew County area.

Does Monticello have any tornado sirens? If so where and they? I didn’t hear any when we were under this warning.
Is there anyway to get off of bowser? We have to go to work and was just wondering!!
I think the answer is No.
I don’t think that we do…but we sure do have an awesome splash pad and an extremely effective four-way stop sign at the square.
Take Bowser to Babin Drive, and travel through UAM to the 425 stoplight.
you can go through the college to get off bowser it wld be that road on the left. the storm was horrible we have huge trees all around our house and my husband and i grabbed the kids and was going to leave but limbs kept falling and it was hailing. im glad noone was seriously injured. i live right down the road from the mobile home with the fallen tree on it. if we can be of any assistance let us knw.
I don’t know about the sirens, but I agree in part with Irritated, but lets get off of the three-way stop signs please……After all, they are historically correct for that area. And they do give it a down-home feeling.
i think we do have an early warning system in place. i remember that a grant was approved and they were discussing 3 sirens all round the uam, drew central and monticello school areas. im not sure where they decided to place the sirens, but I also think that i remember them testing the sirens about 3 or 4 months ago, because you could hear them at the hospital.
We need sirens drastically not having them is terrible for this city!
Sirens are in the works. County responsible. Maybe it won’t take ten years to decide not to do anything. Irritated. Just thank God you weren’t hurt or propery damaged. Learn to drive and if not please stay out of major cities and off the freeways. As for the splash pad, learn to live with it. I’ve never seen a city so full of whiners!
as im making this comment, the last post i could see was “disapointed”. don’t get me wrong, “disaponted i only mention you cuz thats where the comments had stopped.
the only person who mentioned anything of the poor people whose house was destroyed while they were in it was “Crystal Holmes”. everyone else was too busy complaining about how the trees and power outage incovienced their work day.
Those dangerous storms made alot of people get out of bed and start their work day in the middle of the night, right in the middle of the bad weather. none of them complained, but they sure felt horrible for the people who lost their home and were terriied to try to leave the structure for fear of down power lines and a pssible tornado.
And people have the nerve to make comments of having to leave home a little late. well, at least you still had a home to leave late from.
TO THE FAMILY THAT LOST YOUR HOME: my heart and my prayers go out to you, im so verysorry for your loss, but im so thankfull you made it out ok.
Yes i do agree we need sirens here bad!! We have had 2 close calls in the last 2 years and each of which done damage, not to leave out in years past as well. I seen them testing some back in August but dont no why we have not gotten them yet. I know of small towns that have them and it should be a mandate that every town has them for the safety.
I have been told that the City Council believes tornado sirens are unnecessary because a tornado cannot possibly hit Monticello due to it’s location within a specific type of geographic formation. Personally, I believe this formation will worsen the event should a tornado ever hit this city.
Well its good to know there are so many kind hearted ppl left in this town. Before you find your way around that tree how about asking the family that lost thier home if they are all okay and if they need anything. Quit complaining about your power outages and take that service crew/man some coffee or some food, their families are at home without lights too.. while you were sleeping they were already hard at work out in that storm. Yes they chose the profession but YOU can choose to thank them.
To the Family…Thank God your okay
To the Power Crews…Thank God for choosing you to do what you do…some wont say it but I gladly will- THANK YOU THANK YOU!
If we did have sirens, where would people go who do not have a storm shelter. This is the only city I know that does not have a public place for people to go for shelter in case of a tornado. But we have a new town square, maybe we could all go stand there.
I agree about the stop signs and splash pad. Also all the new unneeded crap at McCloy park.Sure,it looks nice and may be fun,but there are much more important things.Yup!! I’m gonna whine too so go ahead and talk about me.I am right along with Irritated.
This is my house pictured. It is only a house. GOD was kind enough to let me have family. That is ALL that matters to me!
Please pray for the families across the state who lost loved ones.
