School Board Adopts ABC Block Schedule to replace 4X4 Block Schedule at MHS

January 22nd, 2014 by

The Monticello School Board voted 4-1 to adopt the ABC Block Schedule to replace the 4X4 Block Schedule, currently in use at Monticello High School.

Video of the meeting will be posted later tonight, along with comments by parents and the school district.

The ABC Block schedule is different from the ABC Modified Block (which was discussed at a recent community parents meeting) because the ABC Block has all 8 classes meeting on Friday, for 50 and 55 minutes each.

Superintendant Bobby Harper told those present, “With all of things that we have facing up, I just feel like this is the right thing to do, and if it falls on its face, it’s my fault.  But this schedule allows us to work in teams.  It allows us to talk about about research and to talk about our kids.”

During the discussion about the ABC Modified Block, as compared to the ABC Block, MHS princial Jim Lucas reported, “After the Sunday meeting, there were so many issues with pairing classes up, I told the group there, the only way we can make sure this works is to go with an ABC Schedule.”  This way, students “will have the same schedule every week.”

The revised recommendation caught the visiting parents in the room offguard, prompting one of them to comment after the meeting, “They just voted yes on something they had never seen. The parents and the students had never seen it. They didn’t address how it will effect the music, athletics, oec classes or students who wanted to be honors graduate, who now can’t because they can’t take 2 foreign languages during the same year.”

The vote to make the change passed with by a 4-1 margin, with Keith Wells being the only “no” vote.

Maybe the tax payers should remember this when it comes time to vote for the school board members. If they won’t listen to the people they represent then why elect them again. I truly see this hurting monticello schools. I didn’t attend monticello schools but my children do thank goodness 1 has graduated because he couldn’t keep up with this new schedule he would have become frustrated and dropped out. I also see the dropout rate increasing.

Since it has been voted for the ABC block schedule, which i am strongly against, then may i suggest that the school board and high school staff think about putting the C day on Mondays instead of Fridays. I think this would eliminate the possibilities of too many teachers giving test on C day or just not doing anything in the class at all since its Friday. I feel that if C day is on Mondays, it would give the teachers a better opportunity to let the kids know what they will be working on for that week, plus let them know of upcoming test, projects due, ect. I feel that this would be a more useful way for the teachers to use this new schedule. I just think all options should be discussed since the school will be making a big change that directly effects my children. I hope this change doesnt hurt my children’s schooling in the long run.

  3. MonticelloSUPPORTER says:

Not everyone was against the schedule change. It seems that only the negative is published and heard in this town!!! Monticello High School needs a change. Maybe everyone needs to ask ALL high school teachers and parents how they feel. Not everyone likes their names mentioned nor their comments posted. There are TWO sides to this schedule change. Some are “for it” and some are against it. Can’t please everyone.

  4. Schenk says:

Why not do a 7 class a day schedule? What was so hard about that. Have every subject all year long. The school I went to was like that, everyone did great. No drop outs and lots of successful people.
The Block system leaves a lot behind. The kids are falling behind and when they go to college it will hit them. Some don’t know what is going on, what homework they have since they were at honors assembly and the teachers went on with kids out of class. They don’t know what to do.
    What a mess.

  5. Me says:

Applaud the guy who’s against it… I’m with the one reader, what about honors electives.. Classes at the oec etc.

  6. TheVoiceHearedButIgnored says:

Why must we change a schedule, one that has been working completely fine mind you, to “improve” test scores that are constantly improving? It is the tagged children , who are still improving just not fast enough, that are keeping us in our current “needs improvement” situation. Also the constant references to schools such as, Batesville, are completely irrelevant to Monticello. There is no possible way to accurately compare them to MHS because of the vast socio-economic differences of the student-body. Another main point brought up is the new testing and the “unfairness” presented to the students by it being in the spring semester and students who have yet to take the class will be at a complete disadvantage. Well the testing company had previously confirmed that they would be willing to work around our current schedule. There are also a great majority of teachers who strongly disagree with this change. These are the same teachers that you put your trust into teaching the students of MHS. But I will leave you with the biggest question of all; if there is no schedule to be proven, without a doubt, to raise test scores what make you think this change will do so?

  7. ths says:

Actually study have shown there’s no real affect on academics whether a school has an eight period day or a 4 x 4 schedule. The cost, however, is significantly different. I have no idea what the costs are for an ABC schedule. I worked in a school with an AB block and it was difficult to keep up with. I like the ABC better, but I agree with the person who wanted the C day on Mondays. I like that a lot. It would prevent the opportunity to waste a Friday. My only questions is what did they do with prerequisite electives?
