zCourtney Breedlove, daughter of Monty and Tina Meek of Monticello and Joe and Toni Breedlove of Hamburg and Shane Hale, son of Bill and Donna Hale, formerly of Dermott, were married in a small garden wedding on April 21st, at the Trotter House.


Leo Jackson

Leo S. Jackson died Friday, April 19th.  Born April 22, 1932 in Wilmar, Arkansas to the late James “Jim” Jackson and Clara Chavis-Jackson, Leo found that he had a gift when he started out working with his father.  He was a very well-known carpenter throughout southeast Arkansas and began his entrepreneurship over 50 years ago building houses, cabinets and room addition anything a person could think of.
 
He confessed his life to Christ at an early age and rededicated his life back to Christ under the leadership of Rev. Jessie Washington and was a faithful member of St. James A.M.E. church in Wilmar until his health failed him.  Although he couldn’t attend church he always tuned in and listen to Bishop G.E. Patterson every Sunday.  Leo is preceded in death by his brothers James Edward Jackson, Alberta Walter Jackson, James Walter Jackson and his sister Madeline Jackson and his first wife Rosie Lee Jackson. 
 
He leaves to cherish is memory, his devoted wife Charlie Mae Smith- Jackson; four sons Gregory Reid (Bennie), Kenneth Smith Sr., Kevin L. Smith, Nick Smith all of Monticello;  three daughters Charlotte Smith, Jo Ann Trotter of Monticello and Toasha Davis of Taylor, MI; three brothers, James Travis Jackson of Kenosha WI, Curley Lee Jackson of Wilmar,  and Lester Marvin Jackson of Stockdale, TX;  two sisters Odessa Winfield of Chicago, IL and Patricia Ann Douglas of Wilmar.  He leaves a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends that will cherish his precious memories forever.
 
Funeral Services to be held at Revival Center Church in Monticello, AR on Thursday, April 25th at 2 p.m. Services entrusted to Christian Brothers Funeral Home of Monticello

Sunday Crash Send Both Drivers to DMH – Edited

zs ztAround 1 pm, the driver of a southbound Pontiac GTO was attempting to turn east, from HWY 425 onto HAY 278, when turned in from of a Volkswagen Passat , which was northbound.

SEEMS transported both driver to Drew Memorial Hospital.

Monticello Police worked the accident. 

Reliable Towing and C&L Wrecker removed the vehicles.


Sarah Beth Pippen – One Monticello Life

Sara Beth, from a prior recitalAs the Monticello community met for the annual Easter Community Service recently, many familiar faces were present.

There was a new face, who was introduced as a part of the program, to sing “How Great Thou Art”, before the message.

Sarah Beth Pippen, the worship leader at Immanuel Baptist Church,  then led the room into worship, as she followed with a strong, spirit-filled rendition of the old, familiar hymn.

Concrete has been poured this week for seven of the piers of the new livestock barn at the Drew County Fairgrounds.

The new barn is expected to be completed by the County Fair in September.


Monticello Native, Rob Shrock, In Concert April 19

The SEARK Concert Association is presenting a special concert performance by Monticello’s own Rob Shrock, April 19, at 7 pm.

Rob spoke to MLive and is excited to be returning to Monticello. He is looking forward to performing for his friends and classmates again.

Rob has led an exciting musical career, since graduating from MHS, including performing and recording with legends of the industry.

He is best known for his associations with Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick, as well as his work on the 72nd Academy Awards show.

The concert will be held at the UAM fine arts center. Tickets are available by calling 460-1060


Accident at Walmart Stoplight

MPD officers are shown working the car accident that occurred at the Murphy Oil Station on HWY 425 north, around 1:50 pm.

No information about injuries was available.


More Downtown “Spring Cleaning”

Another old building, was recently taken down by it’s property owner.

The building, located at the south end of Bailey Street was removed by Bud Bulloch.  Bulloch told MLive that the area will be used for parking area, for awhile; although he wasn’t sure what the future use of the property located west of the Ridgeway Apt. would be.

The demolition of the structure caused the wall of an adjacent building to collapse.  Bulloch also owns that building, and reported that it was vacant at the time, and no notable damage was done to any contents of the structure.


2 More Downtown Structures Demolished

Two other downtown area structures were cleaned up by their property owner, last week.

Two tin covered structures, adjoining Baker’s Supply, that had been there for decades, were taken down. 

Baker didn’t announce any specific plans for the property..  One building was on Edwards street, across from the Ridgeway, the other was “lean’to”, added onto the former Prestige Furniture building, at 300 E. Gaines. St.


Next in Line for Property Removal…..

The former home of Prestige Furniture, located at 300 E. Gaines, and is also slated for possible removal.

Anyone interested in removing the structure, in exchange for salvaging the material (including the brick from several decades ago) should contact Baker’s Supply at 367-8676.


Minor Fire at City Drug

Around 8 pm Thursday night, the Monticello Fire Dept. was paged out to the report of smoke at City Drug, on E. Gaines Street.

Due to their quick response, only a box in the storage area was damaged.

Nikki Hood, co-owner of City Drug told MLive how much she appreciated the quick response of the local fire and police depts, and added that City Drug will open at 8 am, as usual, with breakfast and all services in full operation.

 


Berryman Awarded Policeman Of The Year

The Monticello Police Department awarded Patrolman Kyle Berryman, Policeman of the Year.  The Monticello Lions Club presented Kyle $100 at their meeting, Thursday.

Police Chief Eddie Deaton and Capt Carlos Garcia selected Patrolman Kyle Berryman for this prestigious award. They said various criteria was the basis for the award and Kyle’s achievements for the past 12 months far exceeded everyone else.

Kyle has been a Monticello policeman 4 years.  He is married to the former Amber Nixon, a registered nurse. They have two children, ages 8 and 4. Shown in picture are Amber and Kyle Berryman, Lions Club President Don Hogue, Police Capt Carlos Garcia and Chief Eddie Deaton.
