The swimming pool dedication and opening, scheduled for this afternoon, has been postponed til next week.

Mayor Zack Tucker recently accepted the keys to the former Arkansas National Guard Monticello Readiness Center located on Jordan Drive.

Around 6 PM, Wednesday evening, a large, adult male alligator was seeing crossing Highway 35 near the Bayou Bartholomew bridge at Dermott. He escaped into the ditch, near the bayou, before being caught.
The City of Monticello will dedicate the swimming pool at McCloy Park in honor of the late Alderman Tim Chase, at 4 pm, on its season’s opening day, Friday, May 27th.
An elderly Drew County couple was found deceased in their garden, on Bowser Road, around 11:15, Wednesday morning.

A little acclaimed story from Drew County history was brought to mind last week while I was attending a recent meeting of the Public Health Committee of the Arkansas House of Representatives in Little Rock. A most interesting and kind gentleman whom I had just met asked about the state of the “Bottoms Baptist Orphanage”.
I recall hearing this term when we first moved to Drew County and wondering if it meant that some person from “the bottoms”, a local term referring to the Delta, might have founded the Baptist home. However, research proved this to be untrue.
Today I want to share briefly the story about the Bottoms Baptist Orphanage, more familiarly known in these times as the Arkansas Baptist Home for Children. Read the rest of this entry »

The 24th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team had its record-breaking season halted on Monday with a 7-4 loss to Central Missouri in the finals of the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament at Joe Faber Field.

Shortly after midnight, Saturday night, Monticello police responded to a call on Dillard Street, leading to the arrest of a Little Rock man for shooting of a Monticello man.

Sunday night, members of True Conenant Worship Center joined with Northside Baptist Church, for a special service.
New Covenant, used Northside’s baptistry to baptize 14 new Christians, into church membership, follow Jesus’ teachings, by pastor Marcus Allen.
Of the 14, eight were members of the same family including the matriarch and grandmother, her daughter, and multiple grandchildren.
Northside pastor Sanders Brooks, along with the rest of the church, invite you to worship with them at any time. Sunday School begins at 10 AM, worship service at 11, Sunday night service at 6, and Wednesday evening prayer time at 6:30.


Malorie Allison, Jacob Griffea and Caroline Adair, all graduating members of Drew Central’s cheer team, Friday morning, signed to represent UAMonticello, beginning next year.

26 members of the 6th and 7th grade bands at Drew Central, joined forces to compete in The Music Festival in Hot Springs on Saturday and earned a 1st Division rating, which is the best rating you can get.
After the contest they celebrated at Magic Springs.
This was their 1st time participating in the contest. Chris Bayless, Director of the “Band of Pirates” commented that “these students have worked very hard and deserve this honor, and I am very proud of them.”
