One Monticello Life: County Clerk, Lyna Gulledge

November 18th, 2007 by

Tuesday night, after the election results were posted on MonticelloLive, everyone went home, and all of the election work was done.  Well except for the County Clerks office.  Most of the Clerks work involves tasks that most people do not realize.

Drew County’s County Clerk is Lyna Gulledge.  Lyna started as a deputy clerk in the Clerk’s office in January 1, 2004, and was elected to be the Clerk the following year.

County Clerk’s before her were Mike Caveness and Carolyn Cook.  The Clerk’s office task’s include; overseeing all elections (primaries, school boards, tax votes, etc.), actually paying county bills, probate matters, marriage licenses, preparing the county “tax books”, voter registration, and is the county’s secretary for public hearings and Quorum Court meetings.

The County Clerk’s office staff includes Lyna, 2 full-time deputies, and 2 part-time deputies.

Lyna was born and raised in Dumas, and graduated from Dumas High School.  She moved to Monticello around 1992.  Her husband is Greg Gulledge, who works in the Quality Assurance Department at Maxwell Hardwood Flooring, and has been there for around 10 years.

They have a son, James, who is 8 months old.  James’ favorite toys are a toy cell phone and a “sock monkey”, like most kids parents had when they were kids.

Greg & Lyna are active at the Church of Christ, where she taught pre-school, before “having a pre-schooler”.

Lyna reports that there were 814 votes in the County Road Tax election, with 707 in favor.  She said that, “The election went smoothly, for the most part.  The poll workers handled the few issues that came up in the field very well.”

She added, ”The voting machines are beginning to be accepted better, and worked great, out in the field.”

Lyna seems to really enjoy her job.  When asked what she likes best, she answered, “The personal contact that I have with the people of the county, and being able to help them with whatever they need help with.  Most of the things people come into the Clerk’s office for are serious, from marriage license, to probate.  They want to feel comfortable with the folks that are taking care of their affairs.”

Drew County Judge Damon Lampkin described Lyna’s “always being early and well prepared” as being one of the reasons she was chosen to serve as “Secretary for the Association of Arkansas County Clerks.”

Lyna’s hobbies include: fishing-bass, reading-favorite author is James Patterson, favorite music-old time rock’n'roll, TV show-CSI, all 3 versions (she records the ones she misses), other interests-tornadoes, “their size and devastation, especially after what they did to Dumas, where i grew up.”

You may not have a reason to go to the County Clerk’s office until you have a question about the next election, but rest assured that Lyna and her staff will be as helpful to you as they have been to so many Drew County residents over the years.

Thanks, Lyna Gulledge, for sharing your One Monticello Life.
