I saw my first beatnik – beatnik, not hippie, at the Whaley School. How many other “firsts” there must have been there!
I went to the 1st through 4th grade at W.C. Whaley. My grandparents lived close to the school and I can remember my mother walking me to school during the first grade. My first grade teacher was Ms. Locke and I was instantly in love because I was scared that first day and she put her arm around me and told my mom “I’ll take care of him”.
It’s sad to see it come down and I know it was not an easy decision for Joe either because we started school there together. But lets face it, it had become not only an eye sore but a danger. There was no way to keep the kids out of it and there were illegal activities going on inside as well.
But it is still like saying good bye to an old friend.
How. Sad 2 see it go down…i went to 1st-3rd grade there. Oh the memories!!
