2 PM Update—Water Service Restored
Published by Joe Burgess August 31st, 2008 in County.Water service has been resoted to around 100 Drew County homes, that are served by the Yorktown Water Association. Friday afternoon, service went down, likely related to a lighting strike, that disabled a pump at the Montongo pump and tank.
Service was turned back on Saturday, but water levels never reached the required level to provide service to the homes.
Sunday morning around 5, water crews began searching for a major leak that lost over 400,000 gallons of water since Saturday.
Around 11 a.m., they found a 6 inch water line near 5 Mile Hill with a 6 inch hole in the side of it.
At 1 p.m., MonticelloLive was on the scene and confirmed that service should be restored within the next couple of hours.
I received multiple calls around 2 p.m. telling that water service had been restored as far as the Windy Hills area.

The story below posted around 9 a.m, August 31, 2008.
MonticelloLive.com has received numerous complaints from Yorktown Water Association customers about water service being unavailable since Friday afternoon. The area without service is supplied by the Montongo area pump and tank.
I spoke to their chairman of the water board Sunday morning. The problems began with an electrical failure Friday, which likely came from a lightning strike.
Since Saturday, when operation was restored, over 400,000 gallons of water have been pumped, but the tank has not been able to reach the level that is required to supply the entire coverage area. (Due to the ridges and hills of the landscape, Windy Hills, for example, must have the tank full to receive service, since gravity plays a huge part in water delivery.)
Yorktown crews have been out since 5 a.m. looking for signs of broken line, which could answer where the 400,000 gallons went. Anyone who sees running water that could be a possible line break, please contact Joe at MonticelloLive.com. I’ll get the word to Yorktown Water, who has been flooded with phone calls since Friday.
The association appreciates everyone’s patience, and is doing all that they can to restore water service, but until the leaking location is found, cannot give an accurate estimate as to when service will be restored.
The affected areas include Old HWY 13, Windy Hills, Lakewood Estates, portions of HWY 35 West around Rose Hill Church, and an area near HWY 425.
There is a chance that Yorktown customers who have service may have temporary outages, in an effort to fill the tank, which have reached a 3/4 capacity, but not enough to maintain service levels.
Water service to Rock Springs and the Rabb Road area have remained operational.

We would just love to know for sure something is being done. You would think they would at least leave a message on their machine with some details.
I wonder, if my “reponse” to the next water bill I receive was to mirror the reponse of Yorktown to our current situation if it would cause a disruption of my service??!! (Oh wait, I don’t have service!)….I’ll be forwarding my mounting hotel bill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Mont. Live….that is more info. than we had before.
Those of us that have been without water need to get with Monticello to see about being annexed into the city water system. It seems crazy that we are only 5 miles (Windy Hills) from town but are receiving water from Star city which is 30 miles away. I realize that the actual water comes from Montongo but it still seems that we would be better served receiving service from Monticello.
Looks of that old pipe they all need replaced to me.
We live 3 houses down from the turn onto Hwy 35- I don’t see how in the world it would be problem to get on with Monticello water. Not having ANY water for 48 hours is beyond ridiculous. And like the others said, we had no idea when it was expected to be back on so we just kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Very frustrating.
