Newell breaks 2000 in losing effort

Despite a career-best 42 points from Nate Newell (Sr., Monticello, Ark.) that put him over 2,000 career points, the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (8-12, 3-5 GSC) dropped a 79-70 decision to the Harding Bisons (12-9, 5-3 GSC) on Friday at Rhodes Field House in
Searcy.

Harding took charge early in the first half, opening up a 23-13 lead after a 12-2 run just ten minutes into the contest. UAM would narrow the gap to one (43-42) after a Newell free throw with just under one minute to play in the half, but the Bisons pushed the gap to four (46-42) before the end of the half.

The Bisons opened the second half strong, pushing ahead by as many as 20 (66-46) with 8:25 remaining, before the Weevils began to claw back, pulling to within seven within the last minute of the game; but ultimately falling short.

Newell’s 41 points led all scorers. MJumbe “J.B.” Williams (Sr., Compton, Calif.) added 13 points in the loss. Matt Hall led Harding with 25 points.

The Boll Weevils return to action on Thursday, February 8, as they travel to Arkadelphia to face Ouachita Baptist University. An 8 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.
