New Policy for “Comments” on MonticelloLive.com
Published by Joe Burgess February 19th, 2008 in Site.MonticelloLive has implemented a new policy for posting reader comments.
Comments are welcome and encouraged.
However, certain readers have felt that the site was simply a forum to insult citizens and community leaders anonymously.
All comments will now be approved by our publisher, before being posted. This is not an effort to eliminate comments that may be disagreed with, but rather to insure that all comments are made in a polite, professional manner.
I agree with our “Freedom of speech”, but not the “freedom to insult.”
Comments that are supportive of someone receiving and honor, or losing a loved one are appropriate. Someone who questions a specific action from a city, county, or state entity are welcome to ask what or why. Meanwhile, name-calling and comments that appear to only be meant to “draw fire” will not be posted.
Please remember, with over 25,000 pageviews last week, MonticelloLive is Monticello’s daily news source, a privately owned business providing a service to it’s readers.
Your understanding in this matter is appreciated.

I think this is a good and professional decision. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for this!!! to many people want to take the Main topic of a story and turn it into something it shouldnt be!!!!
Excellent decision Joe! You just raised the value of your website in my opinion.
Great idea. I really wish more people would get past trying to hide behind a screen name. And I don’t think it’s much better if you only post your first name, If I was to post comments under the name “Wade” you might still be left wandering which wade I was.
Very good decision. Gives much credibility to the website.
