candidates-015.JPGBrenda Binns did an excellent job moderating the event, explaining that she was “new to politics”.

She told about the NAACP’s 2008 Voter Empowerment Campaign, which includes: Voter Registration, Voter Education, and Get Out & Vote.

The program’s question and answer time brought several questions, most of which were aimed toward the current City Council members.

Questions mainly were centered around streets and improvements to Jordan Park and the east end.  The council members told the group that “we need a plan”, which brought about more questions about why there hasn’t been a plan already put into place.

There was a specific question about if there was a 3 year plan of improvements to Jordan Park or that area of Monticello.  A council member responded that there was no current plan.

It was pointed out that s group of citizens presented a list of recommendations to the city council last year that were requested for Jordan Park, as a priority list.

Judge Damon Lampkin was recognized as a guest, and was welcomed by the group for the improvement in Drew County.

Also worth noting, City Council members Al Peer and Sherrie Gillespie were present.  Both Peer and Gillespie are unopposed for their positions, and both took an active part in the discussion.  The two openly welcomed any comments in the future to be brought to them about the needs of the citizens, or the community.

The program also recognized Betty Lindsey and the group’s Membership Recruitment campaign, and included the chapter’s president, Tommy Daniels’ closing comments.

Before the Park Commission was abolished, they had taken the time to come up with a 3 to 5 year plan for all the parks.
