Michelle and Joseph Chapman, owners of Monticello Speedway, recently donated half of the proceeds from the 2008 Benefiting Cancer Research & Racing to Cure Cancer to the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
At the request of the Chapmans, the $2,500 donation will be used as a scholarship for a student majoring in pre-medicine. The remaining $2,500 will be given to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, best known for their national fundraising efforts for cancer research and the Race for the Cure.
“This gift demonstrates a significant way to support the fight against cancer from both the research and the caregiver perspectives,” said UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “Monticello Speedway has touched two sides of an issue that affects almost everyone’s life in one way or another. We are grateful for this opportunity to partner with them in this important way.”
The fundraiser, which culminated June 14, involved 20 Powder Puff racers who raised money through a raffle for $500 in gas donated by ARKAT of Dumas . The racers collectively raised $5,000.
