Monticello School Board Sets New Attendance PolicyJune 19th, 2013 by Sarah Spencer
The new policy will allow six days of excused absences, and four days of unexcused absences. Extended illness or other on-going conditions will be reviewed for approval on an individual basis.
Superintendent Harper presented to the Board the Arkansas School Board Association policy updates which the Monticello School Board has been considering for the past two months. These policies include the extracurricular eligibility for home schooled students. The law, which takes effect as of August 16, states that any home schooled student who wants to participate in a school’s extracurricular activities should be treated the same as any other student who moves into the district. The various personnel policies were read and new updates presented to the Board. These policies include dress code policy, tobacco usage policy, financial resolutions and personnel evaluation policy.
Some of the suggested updates to student policy handbooks were reviewed. Mr. Lucas addressed the Board and advised them that recommended changes are coming in, sometimes at up to 20 changes a day.
Mr. Martin addressed the Board about the BYOD policy, which stands for “Bring Your Own Device.” To make up for a shortage of electronic devices available at school, students who have their own personal electronic devices such as smart phones or tablets, will be allowed to bring their own personal electronic devices to school, only on designated days, for use only on the school’s protected wi-fi, and only under their teachers’ supervision. This will help alleviate the school’s shortage of available electronic devices. If any student is caught using their personal electronic device on a network other than the school’s protected wi-fi, or using it at a time or in a manner not supervised by their teacher, disciplinary measures will be in place to resolve these issues.
The school district insurance policies are being reviewed. Superintendent Harper is adamant that the school district provide insurance for every child for every activity. The school’s insurance policies are being reviewed to meet those requirements.
The legislative audit report and facilities report were reviewed.
The next Board meeting is scheduled for July 18, 2013.
