Monticello School Board Honors Students & Teachers
April 18th, 2012 by Mandy MossThe Monticello School Board took time to recognize several groups of students and teachers during their meeting Tuesday evening. Superintended Harper began by bragging on the students’ hard work.
“The kids sitting in this room right now have an excellent academic record…. That’s something we’re very proud of.” “We hope that we are providing the kind of education here that our students can go and do whatever they want with their futures.” – Harper
The first group up was the MHS gymnastics team.
“I know our gymnastic program is mind boggling to me, how many girls are in it now.” “There’s a lot that goes into it, a lot of discipline, a lot of effort on the girls’ part to improve.” “We are very fortunate to have the coaches that we have working with these girls.” “This year the senior girls went to Camden and they won the South District Championship. “ – Superintendent Harper
Coach Williams, the Jr. Lady Billies Basketball Coach, was then recognized by Harper for his success in leading his team to the South Conference Championship, which they won.
“They had an outstanding year, and we appreciate all that you do coach for these girls. It really makes you feel good when you see those kids grow from Junior High… he works with them for three years and then passes them off to his wife.” “We feel that our extracurricular program is part of our educational program.” – Harper
Bobby Harper then addressed Mr. and Mrs. Teague , MMS and MHS Band Directors, saying, “We’re very fortunate to have husband and wife teams working in our district. In these small communities it’s important that we keep good families working with our kids. We appreciate all of the work that they do. The MHS band has been Region 3 sweepstakes winners 3 years in a row. There’s a whole lot that goes into it. It starts with Mrs. Carrie and then Mr. Teague picks it up. They have high expectations for our kids.”
“This year we had 10 students audition for all state bands and three made it out of about 900 people trying out. Three seniors made All State. These kids do an amazing job.” – Mr. Teague
Superintendent Harper then asked members from the Senior Lady Billies Basketball Team to come to the front of the room to congratulate them on being 14-0 in 5A Southeast Conference.
“You ladies had an outstanding year, something that probably hasn’t been done here, ever. Girls, what can we say? We hate to see you go! I’ve watched basketball for a long, long time… but, you are right up there with the best. You’re exciting to watch and you just seem to love to play.”
In closing Bobby Harper presented Kim Wilson, this year’s Arkansas Teacher of the Year, with an award and praised her.
“You’d like to do this in front of the whole city of Monticello because you’re so proud of having a Teacher of the Year. I know that next year is going to be an exciting time and you will represent us well. Thank you for all that you do for us, we appreciate you and we hope that you have a successful year and come back to us.” – Harper

I would like commend Supt. Harper himself for an outstanding job in leading the Flagship School District of Southeast Arkansas. Monticello and Drew County should be more than proud of the two outstanding School Districts in this small but more than par excellence rural county of the Lower Mississippi Delta and Mid-South. I stand proud of the fact without any mental reservation of being a graduate and former honored Student Athlete of the Monticello High School(A Proud Billie) again, we salute the honored students, Staff, it’s Administration and Board of Education.
