Monticello newspaper launches online edition

December 13th, 2006 by

The Monticellonian Advance launched an online edition of its weekly newspaper this past week. Located at www.monticellonews.net, the website will be free for the first month, and after that viewers will pay for an online subscription.

According to an article in the Advance publisher Tom White said, “We are pleased to be able to offer on online edition that will make local news immediately accessible to readers who are interested in Drew County happenings – both the local ones, and those living far away,”

“Many of our readers have long been asking for a website, and we have admittedly moved very slowly and cautiously. We have been working on this site for quite some time and we think we have created one of which we can be proud.

“We invite everybody to check it out during the free introductory period, and to keep watching as we work to make it even better.”

Wendy Tassin, advertising manager, told MonticelloLive Wednesday that plans for the online Advance had been in the works for almost three years as personnel selected the right package of services to offer the community from internet providers. The Advance chose Hometown News Hosting to provide the necessary framework for their online edition. The service offers a full features for a subscription-based site as well as services for advertisers.

You’ve got to be joking! Pay for an online subscription for the Advance? Why would anyone want to do that when the site is comprised of over 65% advertising? I’ll stick with MonticelloLive. It’s continually updated…the news articles are exciting…and I don’t have to sort through dozens of monotonous, cookie-cutter ads. Keep up the GREAT WORK MonticelloLive!

  2. Shelley says:

    I prefer monticellolive…..

But it’s nice of you to be willing to share the “competition’s” site.

I am sure the loyal followers of ML will stick with this site.
    I know I will.

  3. TJ says:

Uhhhh, yeah, right…. like I’m going to pay for an online subscription for last week’s news and events that have already been printed in the newspaper. Hmmmhmmm!

  4. Randy says:

A little too late if you ask me, most papers have had online editions for years. On the other hand, for people who have moved out of the Monticello area its a fairly easy way to make sure your papers delivered on time.

  5. K.T. says:

I dont really understand the point of charging…..Years ago they had a website and they did not charge,I just dont get it!

  6. Randy says:

I dont think they’ve ever had their own website until now, Patty Wooten who is affilitated with them did. Under the name the themonticelloneon or something like that.

  7. K.T. says:

Oh sorry for the mistake then…….

  8. dean says:

i’m with whaley and scott… its old news when it hits the stand. jeff/ M-Live is out-reporting the paper… on a DAILY basis, and doing it for FREE. not to mention he generates more discussion on one article in one day that you get letters to the editor at the paper in a month.

no doubt monticello isnt big enough to warrant anything more than a weekly paper, which really makes the online gig a useless waste of time (the way they’re trying to do it, that is)… and to think it took them 3 years to come up with it at that.

  9. Shelley says:

If Monticello live included weddings and engagements, I don’t think the Advance could stay in business.

I know that’s the only reason a lot of people buy the advance, to see who got married!!

    (and who had a baby)

  10. Steve says:

can we say competition….it seems as if the advance is getting kicked in the butt some and knows it since Monticello Live came along! Way to go ML!!! keep up the great work. I agree with the suprise of them offering it online but then having to pay..wow they are desperate arent they!
The news that comes in the advance is always three days late and a dollar short! and on top of that they dont cover the things that interest people. And the Editorial from the editor, can we say we are still small town to some people, when we have to discuss the things she brings up.

  11. maryland ridgell johnson says:

I’m from Monticello and I would never pay for an online subscription to the advance. I enjoy the on-line version but for me living in california, by the time Thursday comes along, I’ve read the “big” news in the on-line version of the pine bluff commerical. Keep up the good work monticello live!!!

  12. Elizabeth says:

The ADVANCE has been a wonderful paper for a long time, but recently, it does seem to be filled with way too many adds and not enough local news. However, if it is going to be online, I wish it (and Monticello Live) would take a look at the example of a FREE, online paper, such as the Ashley Co. Ledger. They have up-to-date information, and a wonderful repository for its county’s history, too.
Even people from out-of-town can find ancient information, as well as up-to-date. Nevertheless, our town needs a printed paper, and the ADVANCE is it, but I can’t see paying for old information that other papers print online for FREE. This seems to send a signal that the ADVANCE is ALL about making money rather than printing news and having it read.

  13. Chris McCall says:

WOW!!! I just wanted to say that I’ve enjoyed this site more than any other I can think of right now. The largest part of this site’s success is due to all of you!

Reading everyone’s posts at the end of my day is like taking in the biggest breath of fresh air and knowing that while we aren’t there yet, Monticello still stands a chance of living up to its potential.

Thanks to Jeff & all of you.

As for the paper……I wasn’t aware they were even still in print. :-)

  14. Jeff says:

Again, thank you all for your kind comments related to MonticelloLive. On the other hand, a healthy local newspaper only benefits us all as well. We appreciate your visits and participating in our site. It’s what makes it truly special and unique.

  15. Carrie Austin says:

Of course I have a special interest in visiting MonticelloLive. I check it before going to bed every night, sometimes sooner. I like the news, editorial comments, community profiles, and reader response. It is even more interesting when there are comments from people I know. You continue writing, I’ll continue reading. Carrie

  16. This is a joke right!!! says:

Okay, what’s the joke. Is this an April Fools joke. The gig is up. Paying for an online version of the Advance. Surely you must be kidding.

In this little town, paying for an online service. Yeah right. It appears ML is starting to pull some business away from the ADVC.

Can you say overhead. The Advance has lot of it. That’s the reason for the charge. The Online version is so outdated. In time they might get their site user-friently, but today, it’s like they hired an 7th grader to design the site.

  17. Misty says:
