Monticello Native Retiring from Army as Sgt. Major

imageSergeant Major Donna Rogers King, a native of Monticello, will soon hang her boots up after over 32 years of faithful and honorable military service in the United States Army.

She is married to Bennie Edward King of Kinston, North Carolina and has one daughter, Lieutenant Colonel (US Air Force) Dr. Tremikae Owens. SGM King, a 1980 graduate of Monticello High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry and Vera Suber of Monticello. She entered Active Duty on 7 August 1983, attending Basic Training at Fort Dix, NJ. She attended Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, VA, where she was trained as an Automated Logistics Specialist (76P). She maintained that military occupational specialty throughout her career and rose to the top enlisted rank in her career field.

SGM King served in a variety of multifunctional leadership positions to include Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, Command Sergeant, Plans and Operations Sergeant Major, Deputy Command Support Operations Sergeant Major, culminating as the Combined Arms Support Command G-3/5/7 Sergeant Major at Fort Lee, VA.

SGM King participated in numerous combat operations, humanitarian missions, and training exercises including Team Spirit Korea. She directly supported Operation Uphold Democracy, Operation Joint Endeavor, Operation Support Hope, and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Her military education includes the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 58, First Sergeants Course; Battle Staff, Senior Leadership Course, Advanced Leadership Course; Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course; Primary Leadership Development Course; Instructor Training Course, Army Basic Instructor Course, Contracting Officer Representative, Direct Support Unit Standard Supply System Course; Standard Supply Operators Course, Property Book Unit Supply Enhanced and Combat Life Saver’s Course, Manpower and Force MGT, Support Operations Course, Joint Logistics Course, Operational Contract Support Course, GCSS-A and Capability Development Course.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Liberty University and a Master of Arts Degree in Human Resource Development from Webster University. She is a lifetime member of the Sergeants Major Association and Association of Quartermasters. On 17 June 2011, she was appointed as a Distinguished Member of the Quartermaster Regiment and awarded the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin.

SGM King’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit; Bronze Star (1 OLC); Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award); Army Commendation Medal (4th award); Army Achievement Medal (5th award); Good Conduct Medal (10th award); National Defense Service Medal (2nd award); Korean Defense Service Medal; NCO Professional Development Ribbon (4rd Award); Humanitarian Service Medal; Army Service Medal; Overseas Service Ribbon (4th award); Global War on Terrorism Expedition Medal; and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
