Monticello Library fall newsletter
Published by Jeff October 19th, 2006 in News.In the fall newsletter of the Monticello Library, the library reports on the progress of fundraising this year, book sales, and activities of the Friends of the Library. The Annual Membership Meeting is set for November 9, at which time nominations for board members and elections will be held.
Friends of the Library, an organization composed of volunteers and donors, provided funds this year to replace old carpet with new vinyl flooring, four new computers, 12 new computer work stations, and reupholstering a couch and two chairs. In addition, the organization bought a rug for use in the children’s area. Friends also pays for the internet service to the library which enables public use and research.
The October 25 lecture at UAM by Janis Kearney is an event sponsored by the organization. Admission is free, and the public is invited. Few residents are aware, but the library has a perpetual book sale that brings in needed funds for operations. Located in the lower floor in two sets of bookshelves, the book sale charges 50 cents for hardbacks and 25 cents for paperbacks. Books that are donated to the library, if not needed, may often be sold in this way. "After a reasonable time, the books are boxed and sent to the Arkansas prison system, and the shelves are restocked with new donations."
The library also reports that the annual Chocolate Extravaganza fundraiser, held in February, brought in over $4500 for the library.
