Monticello City Council Hears Funding Requests, Nov. 19
Published by Joe Burgess November 19th, 2007 in City. The Monticello City Council held a meeting to serve as an oppurtunity for organizations to request funding for the upcoming yearly budget.
The program included requests from the Boys & Girls Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and the MEDC.
Mindy Chambliss spoke on behalf of the Boys & Girls Club, which asked for $25,000. They have a yearly budget of $100,000, with the balance being covered by donations and grants.
Monticello Chamber of Commerce director, Glenda Nichols, presented the Chambers proposal of $65,000. The groups request will help cover expenses for advertising local events (primarily outside of the county), expenses for programs like the Santa Train, and operating expenses.
The Chamber is responsible for Rough-n-Ready Days, but the festival has grown to the point that it is self-supporting.
The fireworks for Christmas and the Forth of July are donations, sponsorships, and other funds, not funded by “city monies.”
The Monticello Economic Development Commission presented their request for $298,000. The MEDC will use those funds, if approved to continue their program of recruiting new business and industry, helping existing businesses and industries to stabilize and expand, help with workforce training programs, and assist the city in the development of long range planning and community needs, which will encourage economic growth.
