Monticello Around the World

We’ve started a new page on the site called “Around the World.” It’s under the “News” tab. We’ve received many emails from people outside of Monticello who keep up with news and information on our site. It wasn’t until last week that we realized that many of you would like to hear from some of Monticello’s former residents, for updates and to see just how far-reaching MonticelloLive is becoming.

There are Monticellonians “around the world.”

What follows is a recent submission from Charles Lawson, MHS Class of 1943:

Really pleased to learn of your website. We’re currently freezing up here in Mosinee, Wisconsin, below -20 a couple of nites ago. I’m a retired graduate of Monticello High, 1943 from the ole red brick building. Returned from the Japan Occupation to Milwaukee, WI to attend the Milwaukee School of Engineering where Mrs Lawson spotted me my first week there in 1950 and haven’t been able to get rid of her since. If we make it to August this year, will have completed 56 years of marital Bliss!! You really have a nice website here and I’ll certainly enjoy a frequent visit to see “What’s Happen’in” in Monticello!! (February 6, 2007)

Had lots of snow and cold up here until last Friday through Sunday when temps were in the mid fifties, a veritable heat wave, starting a good melt. Heard my first goose honk on Fri and then saw a medium sized flight heading North on Sunday. Took a nice snowmobile ride around our end of Lake Du Bay and on up the Eau Pleine flowage shores Sunday, had my binocs, got to view several Bald Eagles cruising the lake for food and on Saturday, the Merganser Ducks returned for their annual stop off out back of our house to feed on their way North. My son and two grandsons next door got my old fishing boat in the water by sliding it about 100 feet across the snow in our lot next door, down the bank and out to our private little lake formed out back by ice which has not melted yet. The first boat in Du Bay this year as all the launches are still snowed and frozen in. Got my Jeep and Tractor stuck in deep snow trying to tow the trailer closer to shore, had to give up and drag. They took it out Sun afternoon and caught two real nice 17 and 19 inch walleyes. Spring is in the air but only after a little more cold and a few more snowstorms. Gets back down to highs in the mid thirties this week but when Spring arrives here, it explodes.

Sounds beautiful back home. Returned from a three year stint with the USAF in Japan just before Christmas of 1949. I left there for Wisconsin on March 10 1950 after playing a round of golf at the club the day before and it was as you describe it now.

Thanks very much for your reply and I really enjoy having access to Monticello Live! Don’t know how you do it but you have a great website and I think your idea is a very nice one to try. Appreciate your interest very much and ‘Thanks a bunch!’ March 13, 2007
