MIS EAST Students Recognized at Board Meeting; Safety Renovation Bids Approved

Award-Winning Monticello Intermediate School students in the EAST program were recognized at Tuesday night’s School Board meeting and presented an over-view of their projects and awards to the Board.
Eight fourth and fifth grade students along with their teacher, Crystal Grimes, attended the National EAST Conference in Hot Springs, where they presented their project before a panel of judges, and won two national awards.
The first award, a pre-conference award for their project, Feed the Kids, won the Healthy Community award, along with a $300 prize.
The team also won the National Service Project competition and a $1,000 prize. The team of fourth and fifth grade students competed in the finals against six high school teams and one elementary team.
Their service project, A Walk to Remember, was inspired by a young boy who, due to a disability, couldn’t go on their nature trail. The students initially planned to clean up and clear the trail to make it more accessible, but while traveling to the conference, they learned that the young boy who had inspired the project had passed away. The night before their presentation to the judges, they decided to change their project to include building a handicap-accessible bridge in memory of the boy.
The EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technologies) program is a project-based learning program that offers students and teachers professional technology and software for use in a loosely-structured, self-driven environment. EAST students are expected to plan and complete a project which helps their community or school.
Following the EAST presentation, ASBA Policy updates were read and discussed. The School Choice Resolution was reviewed. The Errors and Omissions Liability Policy was reviewed. The Board voted to continue their insurance policy with the current insurer.
Bids to upgrade the school buildings to improve safety were reviewed and voted on. Bids were awarded to Arkansas State Glass and Arkansas State Security to replace doors at the City Park and High School gym, and to install locks and keypad systems at MIS MMS, MHS, City Park and OEC. Interior door locks will be replaced in all schools except MMS.
Approved Partnership Projects for the 2013-2015 cycle were discussed.

The next School Board meeting will be June 18, 2013.
