MEDC Report to City Council
March 22nd, 2011 by Sarah SpencerNita McDaniel, Executive Director of the Monticello Economic Development Commission reported that the new website design is nearly completed and will be reviewed March 18.
Obsolete computers have been removed from the Computer Lab at the Workforce Training Center, by Monticello’s E-Waste Recycling Center, and grant funding from USDA Rural Development is being pursued to purchase new computers.
A report of property inspections and complaints was presented. Interviews for a City Property Inspection Manager will begin Monday. The position is expected to be filled next week.
FEMA grant for the Early Warning System has been submitted. An application to the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism to fund improvements to Jordan Park and McCloy Park has been approved and fully funded. This will include playground and handicap accessibility improvements for both parks and an ampitheater at McCloy Park.
fforts are being made to speed up the process of getting the Municipal Building on the National Historic Register. The Mayor has been in contact with the architect and continues seeking to get a grant for renovations.
Total funding from grants to the City as a result of MEDC to date is $3,014,917.11
An extension has been granted for the completion of the Ridgeway project to May 31. Weather related delays created a need for the extension.

I thought the job of the MEDC was to “recruit” new businesses and industry for our town. Sounds like to me they are a wonderful group of grant writers, but how is that bringing industry (and therefor money & jobs) to our town. I guess I just don’t understand how getting a grant to fund new computers in a workforce training center is gonna help people get jobs that aren’t there in the first place.
Wondering, you are right on target. Its the same bunch of good old boys making money with our tax dollars. Somerday I hope the people will wake up and turn the job of getting new businesses and industry back over to the Chamber of commerce where it suppose to be.
