Published by Joe Burgess February 13th, 2008 in MEDC.Other items covered during last week’s meeting of the Monticello Economic Development Commission included:
UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter gave the University’s report to the MEDC. He told the group that enrollment is right at 3075, which is just 20 below last year, at this time. This is a good report, since several area of Southeast Arkansas have declining populations.
Dr. Lassiter also told the group that UAM would be willing to help with the “library computer project” by supplying technical support, such as helping with installation.
He also commented on how much UAM appreciated Gov. Beebe’s support of the Forestry Research program.
He added that all 3 of UAM’s construction projects are running on schedule.
Pastor Al Womack, of First Assembly of God Church, told the group about the upcoming “Branson Comes to Monticello” night of professional entertainment, which will serve as a fund-raiser for the Monticello Boys & Girls Club.
Shannon Clark, CFO of Drew Memorial Hospital, presented their report, which showed an overall increase, but a loss of over $300,000, due to bad debt. Patient days increased, total admissions were down slightly. Ms. Clark also noted that the new billing system has decreased the time spent getting bills in the hands of patients, which will be very helpful.
The Drew HHI gave their report. They are an organization that is able to help local citizens, who may need help paying for prescription medicine. The MEDC voted to contribute $500 help defray costs of HHI “fees”. “20 for the Future” later contributed to help support the HHI.
The Cornerstone Coalition report included news of their upcoming graduation, and new upcoming training opportunities.
The MEDC also voted to pay an extra payment of $5,000 on principal, towards the spec. building loan, as had been suggested.
Next month’s MEDC meeting will be postponed one week due to the “20 for the Future” Washington, D.C. trip
