MEDC Report: Affordable Housing:

This is a portion of the MEDC report as it was recently presented to the group by MEDC director Truman Hamilton.

I have begun the process of locating and acquiring options to purchase lots on which low income single family housing could be constructed.  Over the last several years, several derelict houses have been removed. Should we be able to secure enough of these vacant lots or other space that may be available, there are grants that could be used to build low income single family housing. This could be a valuable tool to upgrade neighborhoods and fill a need for housing in this area.

If the city were able to secure lots for such housing, it would be a perfect opportunity for a ministry such as Habitat for Humanity to come in and do their thing. Any time God’s people can step in and do the job rather than leaving it in the government’s hands, then we are practicing what the book of James calls “true religion” as well as assuring that things are done in the most economical and efficient way possible. Nothing against the people in local government, but looking after the less fortunate is the job of the Church, and governemnt on every level has proven time and time again that they cannot do the job as efficiently as the private sector. I’m not sure if there is an active Habitat chapter around Monticello, but if there isn’t then I know there are local churches that have the know-how and the man power to make this noble effort a reality.

In addition to lots, there are many houses in the area that are in need of repair before they can be sold for anything other than demolition. Are grants available to restore such houses? Is the interest there?

I agree,a Habitat for Humanity would be an excellent thing for Monticello!
