Mainline Withdraws Request to Build Clinic, Following City Council Confusion

October 17th, 2014 by

imageFollowing last week’s “anywhere but here” reception by the City Council to purchase a section of land on the Whaley property to build a new, ecpanded, centrally located clinic, Mainline Health has withdrawn their proposal.

Here is the letter of retraction…

Dear City Council and Mayor Rogers,

Mainline Health Systems would like to thank you for considering our request to purchase property on the W.C. Whaley site. This site has been used for community service for decades and we are sure it will continue to serve the people of Monticello and Drew County. Mainline is a community owned, community lead, and community focused organization. We only want to serve the needs of the community.

We only want to make W.C. Whaley our home if it is the desire of the people. There appears to be a division on whether this is the best use of this property. We respect each leader and know you are trying to do your best to represent your constituents. With this in mind we would like to retract our request to purchase the W.C, Whaley property. We appreciate the consideration and know it will be used in great ways to serve the people of Monticello and Drew County.

Sincerely,
G. Allan Nichols, Executive Director

  1. Monticello resident says:

Way to go Mayor and Council, don’t think this Mayor is the right one for Monticello, a business wants to come in to town and produce jobs and told NO! Do What! Way to go

  2. Jen says:

This is so sad…..it would have been a perfect centrally located place for the new clinic. I’m not sure the city council and the mayor are listening to their constituents.

  3. Leslie says:

Good to see someone stand up against the cronies on the city council

  4. Just sayin says:

Great job guys a missed opportunity to bring jobs to Monticello.

  5. City council needs to wake up and do what’s right for the people, the mayor wants it

  6. Grandpa says:

Monticello Resident should listen to the council report before making a comment… THE MAYOR wasn’t the reason the land wasn’t offered.. THE COUNCIL was the holdup.. just in case the land is needed someday. like there are people standing in line to build in Monticello.. WAKE UP COUNCIL!

  7. observer says:

I was in attendance at that meeting. The decision to encourage the selection of an alternate location was made by the council members, not the mayor. There was really nothing the mayor could do. If he was for it, they would be against it. You really should attend these meetings or at least watch the videos. It’s an education in how the council works.

  8. Concerned Resident says:

My concern is the ability of people to access services. A lot of people do not have a vehicle to get to mainline. Patients would have easier access at the new location. Maybe that would decrease the use of ambulances as taxi’s.

  9. AAJ says:

It is time to identify by name every city council member who sides on the side of a handful of individuals or even their personal biases rather than the benefit of the whole community. The mayor is not to blame. We should seriously look at term limits for council members.

  10. Alan says:

why do people always judge the mayor. for years now, other than the past deceased mayor, people have constantly blamed the person there. when if you go to the meetings, meet with the council member that have been on council for way to many years, you will listen and learn that the Mayor’s hands are not involved. Monticello resident get your facts straight first.

  11. NAN CARTER says:

I USE MAINLINE AND THERE’S JUST NOT ENOUGH ROOM FOR EVERYBODY. THIS NEW BUILING IS MUCH NEEDED IN OUR TOWN!!! NOW.. IF THE CITY COUNCIL IS SO STUPID TO LET THIS GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY GO, THAT IS WRONG!!! WE NEED THIS AND AS ONE RESPONDER SAID.. IT WILL BRING NEW JOBS TO OUR TOWN AND BRING IN MORE FOR THE CITY. COME ON, LET’S GET THIS BUILDING GOING FOR OUR CITY AND THE PEOPLE WHO USE IT!!! WE COULD HAVE MORE DOCTORS AND NURSES IN THERE AS WELL!!!

  12. I’m glad to see there are other folks in town that think this was a joke. Really, jobs, another business, convenience for people, more revenue. What’s the problem. I read that one council member was concerned we would need this land in 50 years… It would have been a perfect place for this clinic. I don’t understand the councils thinking. This is a no brainer. As far as I’m concerned the Police Station needs to be right beside the new Fire Deparment. Oh yeah, I haven’t been disturbed one time by all those noisy fire trucks, but that is another story.

  13. Allenms10 says:

What I really think they should do with that extra land at WC Whaely is to build a New Police Department and City Office’s there instead of wasting all the money they keep putting into the old one Just the last couple of years alone they have spent enough money on the old buildings to have already built a new one,,thats just my opienion though after all it was the first plan to build both there in the first place…

  14. walter says:

It may not be suitable or feasible, but there is a “spec” building at the new industrial park that has never been utilized. Also, there are several buildings that appear to be empty in the industrial park across from the air port. Just sayin’.
