Local Home Lost to Fire

September 12th, 2010 by

A local family seems to have lost everything, due to a Saturday afternoon fire that destroyed their home on HWY 278 East, near the road construction area around Dead Man’s Curve.

No one was home when the fire began, and flames were rising high into the air, before a passing driver saw the fire.

The Monticello Fire Dept. responded, and battled the blaze, while hauling water to the scene from a hydrant near Carpenter Road.

Princess, the family’s dog, died during the fire.

Life outiside city limits & Monticello water…..hauling water over a mile and a half to put out a house fire and some Monticellonians are up in arms over a fire station going into their neighborhood because of noise.

I live within 1/2 a mile from the house that burned and I would LOVE to have the fire station in my neighborhood!

  2. wesley carnicle says:

keep my mom’s dog in your prayer’s she did not make it out

  3. concerned says:

If I had the land they would be welcome to build the fire station next to my house.

  4. D. George says:

You are so right Karen. Those folks not wanting the station located at Whaley live in fire hazards which they call “historic”. I call them dumb and dumber. Their houses would burn completely down in about 15 minutes, so you would think the closer the better. Glad no one was injured in this fire.

  5. V. Owens says:

I am so sorry for your loss. We will certainly keep you in our prayers.

  6. connie mullis says:

To loose ones home to fire is like a death. The fanily is in my prayers. Thank you to our firefighters, policemen and others who have worked so hard this weekend to protect us. I would like to make a comment about our fire stations and the meeting we should all attend Tuesday night. It is so important to have the best fire and police protection for our wonderful town of Monticello.
I don’t usually express my thoughts in public like this. Having worked in our insurance office for 30+ years and being on the square I would like to share my thought on the location of the new station. Monticello needs the best fire class protection that we can get to keep our rates so we can aford coverage for our properties. I think we need four fire stations. One to reamain on the square and cleaned and repaired. One which is located at UAM and enlarge the building at the Fire Training station on the McGehee highway for the big truck and one located west of town some where on highway 425N. I know this would cost money to maintain the stations, but we would also add a few jobs for men or women in our community and jobs we do need…..We don’t need fancy fire stations just ones that are nice and clean and kept up for the firefighters to stay as they keep watch for us day and night. I hope we can all work together in this effert to make the best choices for our community,

A friend shared a quote with me from Hellen Keller (1880-1968)

” I am only one; but still I am one
    I can not do everything,
but still I can do something
I will not refuse to do the somethong I can do.
Alone we can do so little: Together we can do
    so much”

Please lets all work together as a whole for a better Monticello.
