Blance Lincoln Column, Senator Pryor's Column, UAM News.U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Representative Mike Ross (AR-04) today announced that the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) will receive a $76,641 grant through the U.S. Department of Education. UAM, through its Center for Social Studies Education at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, will use these funds to offer a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad curriculum development trip to South Africa for local teachers.
UAM has worked with Arkansas school districts to develop this project in order to improve the teaching of African studies. Participants will spend five weeks in South Africa attending lectures at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town and travel to points of interest throughout the country in order to enhance their understanding of African culture. Upon completion of the project, participants will receive six semester hours of graduate credit.
“In order to be successful in today’s global community, we must have an understanding of the world around us,” said Lincoln. “With the help of these federal dollars, educators from the University of Arkansas at Monticello will have a unique opportunity to experience the culture of South Africa and will be able to pass the knowledge they gain on to their students in Arkansas.”
“This funding provides a once in a lifetime opportunity for Arkansas educators,” said Pryor. “By gaining first-hand knowledge about the historical, cultural and political environment of South Africa, they will be able to enhance their student’s understanding of South Africa and its important role in world affairs.”
“Today’s students will be tomorrow’s innovators which will help strengthen our economy in this new global workplace, and I am proud to join with my colleagues to announce these funds that will provide Arkansas students the opportunity to study in South Africa,” Ross said.
