Junior football growing big
Published by Jeff September 7th, 2006 in News.
Last week was the first week of practice for Monticello’s Junior Football League teams. They will begin six weeks of Saturday games on September 16. Boys and girls in the third-sixth grades are eligible to play. The MJFL is divided into a 3rd-4th Grade League and a 5th-6th Grade League.
As the league enters its second full year, participation has grown. The MJFL was “organized to provide a football program that effectively teaches football skills, teamwork, commitment, and sportsmanship to area youth in the third through sixth grades,” according to published rules and guidelines.
Driving through neighborhoods and by area schools in the afternoons these past two weeks, Monticellonians have been treated to these teams practicing in earnest, with enthusiasm running high.
Sponsors for the league have teams named after them. In the 3rd-4th grade league, sponsors include Mr. Bug, Griffin Heating & Air, Ryburn Motors, Maxwell Hardwood Flooring. The 5th-6th grade league is sponsored by Union Bank, Simmons First Bank, Parkway Bank, and Commercial Bank.
