Heavy rains bring down high school ceiling
Published by Karon May 2nd, 2007 in Drew Central News.Last week, Wednesday April 25, the roof in the math and science building at Drew Central High School collapsed due to a torrential downpour of heavy rain and hail.
The downpour occurred just before the 7:45 a.m. bell to enter the building and caused the students to seek immediate shelter. No students were directly under the portion in the hall where ceiling tiles and debris fell at the time.
Other damages include the flooding of the boys and girls and the CIV lab had an unknown leak, which flooded that room as well. No CIV equipment was damaged.
The high school counselor’s office was flooded from the ceiling which caused damage to many mounds of paperwork. Across the hall, the assistant principal’s secretary, Fran Colbert’s office was flooded.
Colbert stated, “Water leaked into my computer and printer, the carpet is still wet and about 8 feet of my ceiling will have to be replaced.”
Other classrooms around the school were damaged as well, including: Glenda Jackson’s science lab, storage room, classroom; Alan Goodding’s ceiling; the lower and upper elementary buildings, and the maintenance shop.
Maintenance supervisor Roy White explained, “At this time there is no estimated cost. There is still a lot of figuring to be done until an estimate is possible.”
