Bond Set for Friday Night Shooting Suspect

Tyvion Shaw, the defendant from Friday night’s shooting that injured 4 people, appeared in Drew County Circuit Court, Monday morning, for a bond hearing from Judge Bynum Gibson.

An MPD investigator told the court that it is believed that Shaw was at his residence, when he and his significant other had a disagreement over the phone.

Around this time, he became aware that his significant other had/was intending to smoke marijuana, while pregnant.

When she and three friends, one with a felony conviction arrived, The two males begin a verbal altercation.

After some animated hand gestures, these pulled his pistol, and shot the male, accidentally striking three others, in the process.

Judge Gibson set Shaw’s bond at $15,000, based on his strong community ties, good job, and no prior criminal history.

Shooting Injures Four, Suspect in Custody-

A Monticello man is facing four counts of Battery 1st Degree after a shooting that injured 4 people at a local residence.

Police received the call of the incident shortly after 10 pm on Friday. Chief Jason Akers stated the shooting stemmed from a domestic disturbance and that the four shooting victims had been hospitalized but were stable.

As Officers worked to locate the suspect, whom witnesses said fled on foot with a semiautomatic rifle, the large block of Bolling/ Pine/ Maple was sealed off with the assistance of Drew County Deptuties.

Detectives on the scene of the shooting recovered multiple items of evidence, including the handgun believed to have been used in the incident and an AR-15 and SKS rifle, a shotgun and ammunition.

Tyvion Shaw, age 23, turned himself in without incident at the police department hours after the shooting.

Shaw was initially charged with 4 counts of Battery 1st Degree. The final charging decision will be left to the Prosecuting Attorney once the investigation is complete and the case file is submitted.

Akers stated that the work performed by the Drew Memorial Emergency room staff, as well as the assistance of the Drew County Sheriffs Department was vital in the quick resolution of this incident.

Around 10 PM, Friday night, MPD dispatch received multiple calls about a shooting on Hillcrest St., in Monticello.  Hillcrest is located at the south end of Pine Street.

4 individuals were injured during the altercation, which occurred in the suspects yard.  It is believed the suspect fled the scene on foot.

All were still hospitalized, as of 3 am, Saturday.  One victim was transferred for more advanced treatment for a gunshot wound.

Shortly after the shootings, Monticello Police and Drew County Sheriffs Deputies set up a perimeter from Bolling to Cherry to Pine to Hillcrest Streets, but the suspect  turned himself in at the police department.

Tyvion Deshon Shaw is being held in the Drew County Jail on 4 counts of first-degree battery. No bond has been set.
