Foresters Place Fourth At Conclave
Published by UAM News March 14th, 2008 in UAM News.The University of Arkansas at Monticello placed fourth at the 2008 Association of Southern Forestry Clubs Conclave competition hosted March 7-8 by the University of Florida at Gainesville.
UAM placed sixth in technical events, fourth in physical events, and fourth overall in competition with 14 other forestry schools from across the South.
UAM’s chief Conclave rival, Stephen F. Austin State University, won both the technical and physical events to place first for the second year in a row and sixth time in the 51-year history of the event. UAM is still the dominant school in Conclave, with 28 wins in 51 years, including 17 first place finishes in the last 25 years.
The final standings showed Stephen F. Austin in first place, followed by the University of Georgia, Auburn, UAM, Louisiana Tech, Florida, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Clemson, Alabama A&M, Kentucky, and Texas A&M.
UAM had a number of top four finishers in both the technical and physical events. In the technical competition, Matt Voskamp, a senior forestry major from Ward, won the wood technology competition. Logan Hancock, a senior spatial information systems (SIS) major from Stuttgart, placed second in photogrammetry.
In the physical events, Hancock placed first in both archery and log chopping, and teamed with Voskamp for third in log rolling. Covy Brown, a senior forestry major from Pine Bluff, and Allen Daniell, a freshman forestry major from Sparkman, placed second in the chain throw while Daniell took third in axe throwing. Brown placed second in log birling.
In men’s crosscut sawing, Zach Diemer, a senior SIS major from Little Rock, and Brad Sears, a senior wildlife major from Des Arc, placed third. Hancock and Stephanie Hackney, a senior health and physical education major from Gillett, placed fourth in Jack-and-Hill crosscut sawing and Hackney took fourth place in women’s bow saw.
