Fire Dept. Committee Meets, Looks at Locations
September 29th, 2009 by Joe Burgess
At a recent City Council meeting, 4 members were chosen to serve on the “fire dept. location committee”. Those city council members were, Carolyn Brown, Raymond Hubbard, Sherrie Gillespie, and Beverly Hudson.
They, along with Mayor Joe Rogers and fire Chief Steven Faulkner toured Fire Station #3, which is located on Commerce Road, near Airport Road, and then looked at the W. C. Whaley site, a city owned lot at Patton and Edgewood (located behind Oakland Cemetary), and two privately owned parcels on N. Hyatt Street.
After returning to city hall after the tour, a call was made on a speaker phone to an ISO insurance specialist, who described the benefits to each property, such as how it would affect different neighborhoods in the northern parts of town. If fire station #3 were to be opened as a full-time manned station, then station #1 could be moved away from it’s “center of town” location, without decreasing service to the eastern half of Monticello. The main negative issue with the 3 newly considered locations will be fast access to traffic, such as the heavy traffic flow on HWY 425 North.
Fire Station #2 is housed just north of UAM on Scogin Dr.
Another important issue is to keep the largest number of fire hydrants possible within 1.5 miles of the fire station.
