The Music Theater Workshop at the University of Arkansas at Monticello will present two performances of the long-running hit Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” April 13-14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

“Fiddler on the Roof”, with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, is based on a collection of stories by Sholem Aleichem called “Teyve’s Daughters.” The play opened on Broadway in 1964 and ran for 3,242 performances with Zero Mostel in the starring role of Teyve the milkman.

UAM alumnus Gregory Pearson, a featured soloist with the Utah Symphony and Opera, will perform the lead role of Teyve. UAM student Amanda Kilcrease, a senior from Monticello, will play the role of Teyve’s wife, Golde.  The couple’s three daughters – Tzeitel, Hodel, and Chava, will be portrayed by Heidi Flemister, a sophomore from Monticello, Ashley Couch, a freshman from White Hall, and Janay Kolen, a sophomore from Warren.

Lillian King, a junior from Marshall, will play Yente the Matchmaker. Other roles will be played by Cameron Jones, a freshman from Arkadelphia, Jason Bowen, a sophomore from Lonoke, John Gladden, a senior from Monticello, Eugene Buford Lamb, a junior from Lonoke, Regina Vaughn, a senior from Monticello, and Rayburn Ezell, a senior from Redfield.

“Fiddler on the Roof” is set in small Jewish community in Tsarist Russia in 1905 and revolves around the dairyman Tevye and his attempts to preserve his family’s traditions in the face of a changing world. The play includes some of Broadway’s most famous music, including “Sunrise, Sunset,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “If I Were A Rich Man.”
